Part 2 – The Secret Hidden Behind the Toy Chest

For several endless seconds, nobody moved.
The tiny object lying behind the toy chest looked harmless.
It was a small black pouch wrapped in faded cloth, no larger than a man's fist. Thin cracks covered its leather surface, and strange dried herbs protruded from the opening.
Mariana stared at it.
"I've never seen that before."
Rodrigo slowly bent down, but Nicolás grabbed his wrist before he could touch it.
"Don't."
Rodrigo frowned.
"It's only a bag."
"No," Nicolás answered quietly. "It's been here for a long time."
Doña Mercedes suddenly stepped forward.
"Enough of this nonsense!"
She reached toward the pouch herself.
Before her fingers could touch it, Nicolás spoke sharply.
"Don't breathe too close."
His voice startled everyone.
Mercedes froze.
The boy carefully pulled an old cotton scarf from his backpack and wrapped it around his hand before lifting the pouch.
The smell hit the room immediately.
Not strong.
Not rotten.
Just... strange.
Sweet.
Heavy.
Like flowers left too long in a closed room.
Mariana felt dizzy almost instantly.
"What is that?"
Nicolás carried the pouch toward the open balcony.
"My grandmother showed me this plant."
He carefully untied the cloth.
Inside were crushed gray leaves mixed with black powder.
"This isn't medicine."
Rodrigo looked confused.
"What is it?"
"It's dried huizache mold mixed with old herbs."
"And?"
"When people burn it or leave it in warm places, it releases tiny spores."
Rodrigo blinked.
"Spores?"
"They make healthy adults feel sleepy."
He looked toward the crib.
"But babies..."
His expression darkened.
"...babies struggle to breathe."
Mariana's knees nearly gave out.
She looked at Santiago.
The toy chest had been sitting barely two feet from his crib for almost three months.
Every single breath her son had taken...
had been beside that pouch.
Rodrigo turned slowly toward his mother.
"Who put this behind the chest?"
Mercedes looked genuinely confused.
"I... I don't know."
"You said you placed the toy chest."
"I did! But I never saw any bag."
For the first time, Nicolás nodded.
"I believe her."
Everyone stared.
"You do?"
"The person who hid this didn't want anyone to find it."
Rodrigo called security.
Within minutes, every servant, cleaner, gardener, driver, and nanny gathered in the living room.
The mansion suddenly felt less like a home...
and more like a crime scene.
One by one, Rodrigo questioned everyone.
No one admitted seeing the pouch.
No one admitted moving the toy chest.
Then Mariana remembered something.
"The nursery was repainted."
Rodrigo turned.
"When?"
"About four months ago."
"Who supervised it?"
Mariana hesitated.
"I didn't."
Rodrigo looked toward the house manager.
"Who hired the workers?"
The elderly manager swallowed nervously.
"Mrs. Mercedes recommended a decorating company."
Mercedes looked offended.
"They've worked for our family before."
Rodrigo immediately ordered security to retrieve every employment record.
An hour later, one file made everyone stop talking.
One painter had used a false identity.
His address didn't exist.
His phone number was disconnected.
His employment documents were fake.
The man had vanished the day the nursery was finished.
Rodrigo's face turned pale.
"This wasn't an accident."
Nicolás quietly looked around the room.
"No."
"It was planned."
Mariana rushed back upstairs.
As soon as the toy chest and mysterious pouch were removed, the nursery windows were opened wide.
Fresh mountain air filled the room for the first time in months.
Twenty minutes later...
Santiago stopped coughing.
Not completely.
But enough for Mariana to notice.
She held her breath.
His tiny chest rose...
and fell...
without struggling.
The baby slept peacefully for nearly four straight hours.
It was the longest he had slept since he was born.
Mariana cried so hard she could barely breathe herself.
Rodrigo stood beside the crib in stunned silence.
Fourteen doctors had searched inside Santiago's body.
Not one of them had searched the room around him.
That evening Rodrigo looked at Nicolás.
"You saved my son's life."
The boy quietly shook his head.
"I only smelled what everyone else forgot to notice."
But someone inside that mansion already knew exactly what the pouch was.
And somewhere across Mexico City...
May you like
that person had just learned the evidence had been discovered.
They were already planning to erase every trace before Rodrigo could uncover the truth.
