Chapter 7 - A New Beginning

Returning to the mansion was bittersweet for Derek. The house held memories of Clara, but it also held the lingering ghosts of the horror Julian had brought into their lives.
Derek knew he couldn't stay there. The estate was sold, and the proceeds were placed directly into Rose’s future education fund.
Derek bought a beautiful, sunlight-filled two-story house nestled in a quiet coastal town in Maine—far away from the painful memories of the past, and far removed from the warm, humid climates where ticks thrived. The air in Maine was crisp, smelling of salty ocean breeze and fresh pine.
Maria moved with them, stepping into the role of a beloved family member rather than a simple employee. Derek doubled her salary and offered her a permanent wing of the new house.
The new nursery was designed with absolute love and meticulous care. Huge bay windows let in endless morning sunlight. There were no heavy curtains, no dark corners, and no antique fabrics. Everything was modern, bright, clean, and safe.
On Rose’s first birthday, four months after leaving the hospital, the house was filled with the scents of fresh vanilla cake and sweet berries.
Derek, wearing a silly paper party hat, sat on the plush living room rug. Maria was taking photos with a bright camera, her face lit up with a brilliant smile.
Rose, wearing a vibrant yellow dress, stood wobbling on her own two feet at the edge of the rug. Her legs, once paralyzed and lifeless, were now sturdy and strong.
“Come on, sweetie,” Derek called out softly, holding his arms open wide. “Come to Daddy!”
Rose giggled, a rich, musical sound that filled every corner of the house. She took one step. Then two. Then a wild, unsteady third step, before taking a tiny leap directly into Derek’s waiting arms.

Derek pulled her tight against his chest, burying his face in her sweet-smelling, curly brown hair. He felt her warm breath against his neck, strong, deep, and steady.
He closed his eyes, offering a silent prayer of gratitude to the sky, to Maria, to the doctors, and to the fierce, unbeatable spirit of his tiny girl. The nightmare that had almost stolen his entire world was finally over. Rose was safe, she was healthy, and together, they had a lifetime of bright tomorrows waiting for them.
