Chapter 4 - The Midnight Contract

The door opened, and Nurse Sarah entered, carrying a small metal tray containing a syringe and a bag of intravenous fluid. She was a tired, overworked nurse who had been reassigned to Room 412 for the night shift.

"Oh, Maria," Sarah said, surprised to find the janitor still in the room. "You're still cleaning in here?"

"Just... wiping down the counters," Maria said, stepping instinctively between the nurse and Jonathan's IV pole. Her heart was hammering against her ribs. "Nurse Sarah, what is that?"

"Dr. Vance signed off on a palliative sedative requested by Mrs. Reed," Sarah explained, checking the chart attached to the end of the bed. "It's to ensure he doesn't experience any muscular spasms or distress before the legal team arrives at eight o'clock."

Jonathan lay completely still, his eyes closed, his breathing artificially slowed. He knew what that sedative was. In high enough doses, a heavy central nervous system depressant would suppress his newly awakened respiration, masking a fatal cardiac arrest as a "natural decline."

"Nurse Sarah," Maria said quickly, blocking the nurse's access to the IV port. "Did Dr. Harrison clear that? He was the one who said to wait twenty-four hours for the brain scan."

Sarah frowned, looking annoyed. "Maria, with all due respect, you're on environmental services. The hospital director approved the order. Mrs. Reed is his legal guardian. Please step aside so I can administer the dose."

"No," Maria said firmly, standing her ground.

Sarah stopped, staring at Maria in disbelief. "Excuse me? Maria, if you interfere with medical care, I will call security immediately and have you escorted off the premises."

"Call them," a deep, commanding voice spoke from the doorway.

Both women turned. Standing in the entrance was an elderly man dressed in the black shirt and white collar of a Catholic priest, carrying a small leather bible. Beneath the clerical collar, however, were the razor-sharp eyes and stern jaw of Marcus Vance, Chicago’s most formidable corporate litigation attorney.

"Who are you?" Sarah asked, flustered. "Visiting hours are over."

"I am Father Marcus," Vance said smoothly, stepping into the room and closing the door firmly behind him. He engaged the manual lock on the door handle. "I am here to administer last rites to Mr. Reed at the personal request of his late mother's trust estate."

"We weren't informed—"

"You don't need to be informed of spiritual care, Nurse," Vance said, stepping toward the bed. He looked down at Jonathan, his eyes narrowing as he saw the faint movement of Jonathan’s right fingers. Vance immediately recognized the signal—a specific hand gesture Jonathan used in boardrooms when a deal was approved.

Vance turned back to the nurse, his voice turning ice-cold. "Nurse, I suggest you take that tray and step out of this room for ten minutes while I perform the final sacrament. If you attempt to inject that substance into my client—yes, my client—I will have an emergency injunction served on you personally before sunrise, citing attempted murder."

Sarah’s face drained of color. "Your client? He's comatose!"

"He is not," Jonathan rasped, opening his eyes and sitting up slightly, supported by the pillows.

Sarah gasped, dropping the metal tray. The syringe fell to the floor, rolling harmlessly under the table. She stumbled back toward the door, reaching for the handle, but Vance stepped in front of her.

"Nurse Sarah," Vance said calmly. "You are an innocent party caught in a very dangerous conspiracy. Mrs. Reed and Andrew Croft have falsified medical records and bribed Director Vance to execute Jonathan Reed before his financial trust matures at noon today. If you walk out that door and raise an alarm, you become an accessory to corporate treason and attempted murder. If you stay quiet and help us for the next two hours, Mr. Reed will ensure your nursing license and career are protected forever."

Sarah looked from the legal titan to the billionaire who was supposed to be a vegetable, then at Maria, who stood like a shield beside the bed. "What... what do you want me to do?"

"Replace that sedative with a standard saline drip," Jonathan said, his voice stronger now, fueled by adrenaline. "And keep Victoria and Andrew from knowing I am awake until the board meeting at ten o'clock."

Vance pulled a thick leather briefcase from under his long black coat, opening it on the bedside table. He pulled out a stack of documents bearing heavy red seals.

"Jonathan," Vance said, his voice trembling with rare emotion. "It's good to have you back. We have very little time."

"The Phoenix Clause, Marcus," Jonathan said. "Is it intact?"

"Yes," Vance replied, pulling out a pen. "Five years ago, when you built Reed Enterprises, you drafted a secret contingency protocol. In the event of your physical incapacity, if you were ever restored to consciousness, all power of attorney held by Victoria or Andrew is instantly revoked upon your signature witnessed by two non-interested parties."

Jonathan looked at Vance, then turned his gaze to Maria and Sarah.

"Maria," Jonathan said softly. "You saved my life tonight. I need you to sign as my first witness."

Maria stepped forward, her hand trembling as she took the pen from Vance. "Mr. Reed, I'm just a cleaning lady. Will my signature hold up in court?"

"Your signature, Maria," Vance said with a rare smile, "is the signature of an honest witness. It is worth more than all the lawyers in Chicago."

Maria signed her name neatly on the document. Sarah, realizing the gravity of the situation and choosing the side of justice, stepped forward and signed as the second witness.

With great effort, Jonathan took the pen. His fingers were stiff, his muscles burning with fatigue, but he pressed the tip to the paper. With bold, jagged strokes, he signed his full name: Jonathan Edward Reed.

As the final stroke was completed, Vance stamped the document with a notary seal.

"It is done," Vance declared. "As of this moment, you are once again the sole controller of Reed Enterprises, your medical care, and your estate. Victoria and Andrew have no legal standing."

"That isn't enough, Marcus," Jonathan said, his eyes darkening with cold determination. "They tried to kill me. They tried to steal three years of my life. I don't just want my company back. I want them exposed in front of the entire world."

"What is your plan?" Vance asked.

May you like

Jonathan looked at the clock. It was 5:00 AM. "At ten o'clock, Andrew has called an emergency board meeting in the hospital auditorium to announce the merger of Reed Enterprises with Croft International, liquidating my shares. We are going to let them hold that meeting."

Jonathan turned to Maria. "Maria, I need your daughter to do one more small favor for me..."
