Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The morning sun flooded the bedroom with brilliant, unmerciful light. When I woke up, Sarah was waiting with a fresh set of clothes, a soft silk blouse, and a high collar that easily concealed the fading bruises on my neck.
Downstairs in my father’s private study, a team of legal and financial experts sat around a massive mahogany conference table. Marcus Vance, my father’s chief legal counsel, stood up as I walked in, offering a respectful nod.
“Good morning, Ms. Hale. We have a lot of ground to cover,” Marcus said, gesturing to a seat at the head of the table next to my father.
In front of me lay three thick, leather-bound folders. I opened the first one, and my breath caught. It was a complete forensic audit of Sterling Construction, detailing every shell company, every inflated invoice, and every questionable transfer of funds that Daniel and Vanessa had orchestrated over the past eighteen months.
“How did you get this?” I asked, looking up at Marcus.
“Your father never stopped keeping tabs on your husband, Evelyn,” Marcus explained smoothly. “We had suspicions that Daniel was embezzling from corporate accounts to fund Ms. Cole’s extravagant lifestyle—her penthouse lease, her luxury cars, her designer wardrobes. But last night, after you made that call, your father authorized a full-scale forensic seizure of their digital servers.”
I flipped to the second folder. It contained copies of property deeds, bank statements, and overseas wire transfers routed through accounts registered under Vanessa’s maiden name.
“She’s been bleeding him dry while convincing him I was the enemy,” I realized aloud, a cold clarity settling over my chest.
“Precisely,” my father said, leaning back in his leather chair. “Daniel is blinded by arrogance and infatuation. He thinks he’s a corporate titan, but he’s just a puppet with Vanessa pulling the strings—and Vanessa is about to pull him right off a cliff.”
Marcus leaned forward, tapping a document on the table. “Here is our strategy. First, we file for divorce under grounds of extreme physical and emotional abuse, backed by Dr. Sarah’s medical report and your testimony. Second, we freeze all joint accounts and personal assets tied to Sterling Construction. Third, we initiate an immediate corporate audit citing suspicion of massive financial fraud and insider trading.”

“And Daniel?” I asked. “How will he react?”
“He will panic,” my father answered coldly. “He will run to his banks, his investors, and his lawyers. And he will find every single door slammed directly in his face. By tomorrow afternoon, Daniel Sterling will be entirely bankrupt, legally cornered, and utterly alone.”
