Chapter 3 - The Summons at Dawn

The morning sun cast a pale, golden light across the hardwood floors of our modern, minimalist penthouse overlooking the city skyline. Nathan sat at the marble kitchen island, a tablet resting beside a steaming cup of artisan coffee. He looked up as I walked in, wearing a silk robe, with Lily happily munching on blueberry pancakes at the counter.
“Is it done?” Nathan asked, his voice calm, steady, and entirely devoid of the meekness my family always projected onto him.
“It’s done,” I said, pouring myself a cup of black coffee. “The automated halt order went into effect at midnight. Veritas Holdings has officially ceased all financial subsidies to the Hale estate. The county tax collector was notified electronically twenty minutes ago.”
Nathan offered a thin, cold smile. He was a financial genius who managed sovereign wealth funds and multi-billion-dollar corporate takeovers; my family’s ignorance about his actual career had always been their biggest blind spot. When we married, my mother laughed in our faces, telling Nathan he’d never amount to more than a glorified spreadsheet monkey. Nathan had simply smiled, said nothing, and quietly built an empire while my parents slowly drank and gambled away their inheritance.
“What about the secondary liabilities?” Nathan asked, tapping his tablet screen.
“The mortgage default is already triggered,” I replied, leaning against the counter. “The commercial bank holding their primary mortgage note has been looking for an excuse to foreclose for two years due to missed covenant ratios. Without our continuous cash injections masking their insolvency, the bank’s risk assessment algorithm will flag their account by noon today.”
Just on cue, my phone began to vibrate on the marble countertop.
The caller ID flashed: Mother.
I let it ring.
It buzzed again immediately. Then a third time. Followed by a frantic barrage of text messages popping up on the screen in rapid succession.
Lenora: Clara, answer your phone this instant! Lenora: Where is the tax clearance certificate? The folder on the console was empty! It only had some incomprehensible legal jargon about a debt acceleration clause! Lenora: Call me back right now, or you are disowned from this family forever! Do you hear me? Forever!
I picked up the phone, stared at the screen, and calmly blocked her number.
“Who was it?” Lily asked innocently, syrup on the corner of her lip.
“Just spam, sweetie,” I smiled, wiping her face with a napkin. “Just spam.”
Across town, inside the cavernous, high-ceilinged foyer of the Hale estate, panic was beginning to set in like rising floodwaters.
Lenora Hale stood frozen in front of the console table, clutching a sheaf of legal papers that made no sense to her trembling fingers. Her face had lost all its color, turning a pasty, sickly gray. Her manicured nails crumpled the top page of the legal notice.
“Cassandra!” Lenora shrieked, her voice cracking as it echoed up the curved wrought-iron staircase. “Cassandra, get down here right now!”
Moments later, Cassandra came clattering down the stairs in a designer silk dressing gown, looking annoyed and disheveled. “Mother, what on earth is wrong? Why are you screaming at eight in the morning? My head is pounding from the champagne last night.”
“Read this!” Lenora shoved the papers into her oldest daughter’s hands. “Read this right now and tell me I’m losing my mind!”
Cassandra snatched the papers, her eyes scanning the dense legal terminology. At the top, the letterhead read: Office of the Municipal Tax Assessor & Registrar of Deeds. Further down, bold text stared back at her: NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE TAX FORECLOSURE AND LIEN REINSTATEMENT DUE TO DEFAULT OF SUBSIDY AGREEMENT.
“What is this?” Cassandra frowned, her brow furrowing. “Where is the tax exemption form? Where is the signature from the county clerk?”
“There is no exemption form!” Lenora gasped, her breathing growing shallow. “That little ungrateful wretch… Clara! She switched the folders! Look at the bottom of the page! Look at the corporate guarantor!”
Cassandra’s eyes dropped to the fine print at the bottom of the page. There, listed as the primary creditor and majority lienholder who had just pulled all financial backing, was a name neither of them expected to see in a million years.
