Chapter 4 - THE TANGLED WEB OF THE KANE FAMILY

Julian Kane was everything Marcus was not: polished, wealthy, and ruthless. As the managing partner of a venture capital firm in Los Angeles, Julian had spent years ignoring his brother’s shady dealings—until Marcus’s arrest threatened to expose financial irregularities in family-held trust accounts.
When I returned to the hospital, two men in tailored suits were standing outside Sarah’s room, flanked by a hospital administrator.
“Dr. Carter,” the administrator said nervously as I approached. “This is Mr. Julian Kane’s legal representation. They are presenting a temporary court order regarding the children.”
One of the lawyers stepped forward, holding a manila folder. “Dr. Carter, under Washington state law, until a formal custody hearing is held, the immediate paternal relatives have standing to request protective custody, given the pending criminal charges against both parents.”
“Pending charges against both parents?” I repeated, my voice dropping into a dangerous register. “Sarah is the victim of a kidnapping and domestic abuse scheme.”
“That is an unproven allegation,” the lawyer replied smoothly. “Our client, Julian Kane, has filed documentation showing that Mrs. Kane has a history of severe depression and instability. We are here to ensure the children are placed in a safe, neutral environment under the care of their uncle.”
“I am their uncle,” I spat out. “And you won’t take one step into that room.”
The door to the room opened, and Sarah stepped out, wearing a hospital gown covered by a heavy cardigan. She was pale, but her head was held high.
“Julian doesn’t care about the children,” Sarah said, her voice echoing clearly down the corridor. “He cares about the trust fund our mother set up for them before she died.”
The lawyers exchanged a brief, subtle look that didn’t escape my surgical eye.
“What trust fund?” I asked, turning to Sarah.
“Mom left a three-million-dollar educational trust for any children I might have,” Sarah explained, looking directly at Julian’s lawyer. “It was structured so that if I were declared legally incompetent or deceased, the control of the fund would revert to my husband’s side of the family if he was named legal guardian. Marcus didn’t just want to control me, Nathan. He and Julian were using the trust as collateral for their failed real estate investments in California.”
The revelation hit like a physical blow. The mystery of why Marcus had kept Sarah trapped for seven years instead of simply leaving her suddenly made terrible, logical sense. It wasn’t just abuser mentality; it was a cold, calculated financial conspiracy.
“Is this true?” I confronted the lawyer, stepping directly into his line of sight.
The attorney adjusted his tie, visibly rattled. “Our client’s financial arrangements are private matter—”
“Our mother’s estate was managed by a firm in Seattle,” I interrupted, the pieces connecting in my mind. “I signed off on the trust structure in 2016 before Sarah and I stopped speaking. Julian couldn’t access the principal without proof that Sarah was unable to make financial decisions. That’s why Marcus tried to frame her as mentally unstable!”
I turned to Detective Vance, who had just stepped off the elevator.
“Detective, arrest these men for obstruction, and get a federal subpoena for the Kane Family Trust bank accounts in California.”
Vance didn’t hesitate. He gestured to two uniformed deputies accompanying him. “Gentlemen, you’re coming with us for questioning regarding financial fraud and grand larceny.”
As the lawyers were led away, Julian Kane himself emerged from the side stairwell, his face pale and sweating despite his expensive coat. He saw the deputies, saw me standing beside Sarah, and realized the trap had snapped shut.
“Julian,” Sarah said softly, walking up to her brother-in-law. “You told me seven years ago that Nathan hated me. You helped Marcus forge those documents.”
Julian looked away, unable to meet her green eyes. “Marcus said you were going to leave him, Sarah. He said it would ruin the family.”
“You ruined yourselves,” I said, stepping between him and my sister. “And now you’re going to pay for every second she suffered.”
The arrest of Julian Kane triggered a cascade of federal investigations. Within forty-eight hours, forensic accountants discovered a paper trail linking Marcus and Julian to systematic fraud, identity theft, and mail interception across state lines. The false narrative they had built around Sarah crumbled into dust under the weight of hard, cold evidence.
That night, for the first time in seven years, Sarah slept without a guard outside her door, surrounded by her three children in a secure, private wing of the hospital.
I sat in the armchair beside her bed, watching the gentle rise and fall of Lily’s shoulders as she slept beside her mother.
“Nathan?” Sarah murmured in the dark.
“I’m here, Sarah.”
“Do you think we can ever get back what we lost?”
May you like
I looked down at the real silver bracelet sitting on the nightstand—its crescent-shaped dent reflecting the dim nightlight.
“We can’t change the last seven years,” I said quietly. “But we have the rest of our lives to build something new.”
