Chapter 4 - THE GALA OF ILLUSIONS

Night fell over the city, wrapping the skyscrapers in a glittering shroud of neon and glass. At the downtown Grand Meridian Hotel, the annual Vanguard Technologies Charity Gala was in full swing. Orchestral music drifted across the grand ballroom, where elites in designer tuxedos and sparkling evening gowns mingled beneath crystal chandeliers.

Standing near the edge of the VIP stage, Jasper Sterling felt like the king of the world.

He wore a custom midnight-blue tuxedo, his hair styled to perfection, a glass of vintage champagne resting casually in his hand. Beside him, Gillian wore a diamond necklace Jasper had purchased with company funds that very afternoon, while Priscilla posed for smartphone photos, eagerly tagging herself as tech royalty.

“Jasper, darling,” CEO Marcus Vance of Vanguard Technologies said, walking up and clapping him warmly on the shoulder. “The Series B term sheet is locked in. Twenty million dollars clearing escrow on Monday morning. Your valuation is going through the roof.”

Jasper beamed, his chest swelling with pride. “Thank you, Marcus. It’s been a relentless push, but we deliver results. Innovation requires absolute dedication. No distractions.”

“Speaking of distractions,” Marcus chuckled, scanning the room. “Where is your lovely wife? I thought for sure Hailey would be here tonight, especially just days after giving birth. She’s always been such a quiet, elegant presence.”

Jasper’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he smoothed it over with practiced charm. “Hailey is... resting at home. You know how delicate new mothers can be. She’s a bit fragile, caught up in the nesting phase. Honestly, she prefers to stay out of the spotlight.”

“Understandable,” Marcus nodded, raising his glass in a toast. “Well, enjoy your night, Sterling. You’ve earned it.”

As Marcus walked away, Priscilla leaned in close to her brother. “Honestly, Jasper, it’s probably better she stayed home. She always dresses like a librarian anyway. If she showed up tonight looking exhausted post-pregnancy, it would have killed our aesthetic for the press photographers.”

Jasper nodded, taking a sip of his champagne. “She’ll fall in line by tomorrow. Once I tell her I need her signature on some asset reallocation forms for the new corporate headquarters, she’ll sign them without reading. She always does.”

Neither Jasper, nor his mother, nor his sister had any inkling of what was unfolding in the private offices on the upper floors of the hotel.

Seated in a private VIP suite overlooking the grand ballroom, my father and I watched the live stream of the gala on a massive wall-mounted display. Mr. Henderson stood beside us, holding a sleek black leather folder containing the final execution documents.

“Look at him,” my father said, his voice cold as ice, pointing at the screen where Jasper was laughing with a group of tech journalists. “He’s basking in the glow of money that doesn't belong to him, funded by an empire he thinks he’s smarter than.”

“He’s performing for an audience that only values success,” I said softly, rocking Toby in my arms. The recovery suite at home had been temporarily mirrored here in the hotel’s penthouse suite, allowing me to monitor every move without breaking my postpartum recovery protocols. “He genuinely believes that because he discarded me at the hospital, there are no consequences.”

My father looked down at me, his expression softening into profound affection. “The consequences are arriving precisely at midnight, Hailey. That is when the grace period on his seed-round debt covenants officially expires.”

“Let the countdown begin,” I whispered.

Down in the ballroom, the house lights dimmed, and the master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the MC announced into the microphone, his voice echoing across the room. “Before we begin our charity auction, we have a very special live financial announcement regarding Vanguard Technologies and its premier subsidiary partner, Sterling Innovations!”

Jasper straightened his tie, puffed out his chest, and began stepping toward the stage steps, ready to accept the applause of the room.

He had no idea that at that exact second, every smartphone in the ballroom—including his own—buzzed violently with an emergency corporate flash notification.
