Chapter 6 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Six months passed.

The corporate world had completely forgotten about Jasper Vance. Vance Nexus was re-branded under the Robertson umbrella and became an overnight global phenomenon, led by a new management team. Jasper, completely bankrupt and blacklisted from every venture capital circle in the country, had to move back into a cramped, dilapidated two-bedroom apartment in the outskirts of the city—sharing it with his mother and sister.

The luxury dinners were replaced by instant noodles and bitter arguments.

"This is all your fault!" Priscilla screamed one evening, tossing a stack of unpaid utility bills onto the laminate coffee table. "If you hadn't been so arrogant to Hailey, we would be living in a mansion right now! I have to work as a cashier at a grocery store, Jasper! People recognize me!"

"Me?!" Jasper yelled back, looking disheveled, his eyes bloodshot from working two retail jobs just to pay off his residual debts. "You and Mother were the ones fueling the fire! You told me she was soft! You told me to leave her on the bus!"

"You're the man! You should have known better!" Gillian wailed from the kitchen. "My friends don't even talk to me anymore! We are pariahs!"

Jasper stormed out of the apartment, unable to bear the toxic environment. He walked down the cracked pavement of the suburban street, his shoes worn out. He passed by a newsstand and stopped dead in his tracks.

On the cover of Business Elite magazine was a breathtaking photo of Hailey.

She was standing confidently in front of a new corporate headquarters, smiling brilliantly. The headline read: "Hailey Robertson: The Billionaire Heiress Taking the Tech World by Storm while Redefining Modern Motherhood." The article detailed her appointment as the Executive Vice President of Robertson Global's tech venture division. It also mentioned her extensive philanthropic work, creating foundation funds for single mothers and post-natal care units in public hospitals.

Jasper stared at the photo. She looked more beautiful, powerful, and radiant than she ever had during their marriage. He realized with a crushing weight that he had possessed a diamond, but had been too obsessed with cheap glass to notice.

He looked into his pockets. He had exactly five dollars left until his next weekly paycheck. He walked to the nearest transit shelter, sat on the cold metal bench, and waited for the city bus. As the heavy vehicle pulled up and the doors opened, Jasper swallowed his tears, realizing this was now his permanent reality.
