Part 2: The Truth They Tried to Bury

"You wouldn't dare."
My mother's voice cracked as though she still believed fear could stop me.
I looked at her for a long moment.
"I already did."
The silence inside the living room became unbearable.
Outside, children from neighboring houses laughed as they rode bicycles through the quiet Ohio street, completely unaware that one family was falling apart only a few feet away.
Dad finally rubbed both hands across his face.
"Linda..."
His voice sounded twenty years older.
"We can explain."
I shook my head.
"No, Dad. There is no explanation for stealing from your own granddaughter."
Jessica suddenly exploded.
"This is ridiculous! Mom and Dad were just helping me!"
Craig frowned.
"Helping you?"
Jessica spun toward him.
"You got consulting money too!"
Craig looked stunned.
"I thought those were payments for the renovation projects."
"They weren't?"
I slowly pushed another document toward him.
"They were labeled consulting fees because it looked legitimate during tax reporting."
Craig's face drained of color.
"You mean..."
"I mean Dad used company funds to pay family members while hiding it inside payroll."
Kyle looked at Jessica with disbelief.
"You knew?"
Jessica avoided his eyes.
"I..."
"You knew."
"I thought it was temporary."
Kyle laughed bitterly.
"Temporary?"
"You've been taking money meant for Sophie."
Jessica finally snapped.
"Oh, stop acting like she's some saint!"
She pointed directly at me.
"She always thought she was better than everyone because she worked so hard!"
"I deserved something too!"
"No," I answered quietly.
"You deserved honesty."
"You didn't deserve another child's future."
The room fell silent again.
Then something unexpected happened.
Craig walked over to Sophie.
He knelt until they were eye level.
"I'm sorry."
His voice shook.
"I honestly didn't know."
Sophie looked uncertain.
"You didn't?"
"No."
He swallowed hard.
"If I'd known, I never would've accepted a penny."
His wife quietly nodded beside him.
Neither of them looked angry.
They looked ashamed.
Across the room, Dad finally stood.
"I signed everything."
Mom stared at him.
"Frank!"
He ignored her.
"I told myself we'd replace Sophie's share later."
His shoulders slumped.
"But every year there was another excuse."
Mom suddenly burst into tears.
"It wasn't supposed to become this."
I looked at her.
"It became exactly what you allowed."
She collapsed into the nearest chair.
"I was angry."
"At me?"
"No."
"At Derek."
She wiped her eyes.
"When you married him instead of joining the family business...I felt abandoned."
"So you punished our daughter?"
She couldn't answer.
Jessica crossed her arms again.
"This is still being blown out of proportion."
Kyle slowly removed his wedding ring.
Everyone noticed.
"What are you doing?"
Jessica whispered.
Kyle placed the ring on the coffee table.
"You lied to me."
"You lied about where the money came from."

"You let me believe your parents were simply generous."
"They were stealing from a child."
Jessica's confidence finally cracked.
"Kyle..."
He stepped back.
"I need some time."
Without another word, he walked out the front door.
The sound of his car pulling away echoed through the quiet neighborhood.
