Chapter 10 - Forever Home

That evening, the sun set over the Caldwell Estate in a breathtaking display of brilliant orange, deep pink, and soft gold.

After a long day of playing in the park, the family gathered in the estate's vast, blooming glass greenhouse for dinner. The air was filled with the sweet scent of jasmine, fresh roses, and warm homemade bread.

Ethan, Lily, and Emma sat at a round wooden table, eating, laughing, and sharing stories about their week at school.

"Dad!" Emma announced proudly, holding up a piece of paper covered in bright watercolor paints. "I drew our family picture today in art class!"

Ethan took the paper carefully, studying it like it was the most valuable painting in the world.

The drawing showed a big, sturdy house under a giant yellow sun. In the center stood a tall man with gray hair, wearing a big blue smile, holding hands with two little identical girls in red dresses. Up in the cloud-filled sky, Emma had painted two gentle angels with gold crowns, looking down on them with soft smiles.

"That's Mommy Sarah and Auntie Caroline up in heaven," Lily explained softly, pointing to the two angels in the sky. "Emma said they're best friends now, watching us eat pancakes."

Ethan felt a deep, soothing warmth fill every corner of his soul. He looked at the drawing, then looked at his two beautiful daughters, whose eyes were shining with complete trust, safety, and happiness.

"It's the most beautiful painting I've ever seen, Emma," Ethan said, his voice soft and tender. "We're going to frame it and put it right in the main hallway."

After dinner, Ethan tucked the twins into their canopy beds. The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a small nightlight shaped like a crescent moon.

Lily pulled her soft blanket up to her chin, looking up at Ethan as he sat on the edge of her mattress. "Dad?"

"Yes, my sweet girl?"

"Do you remember the day you fell in the park?" Lily asked softly.

"I remember every second of it, Lily," Ethan smiled, gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear.

"I used to think that was the scariest day of my life," Lily murmured, her eyes growing heavy with sleep. "When Mommy went away, I was so scared we were going to be lost forever. But now... I think God just led us to you so we could all help each other."

"He certainly did, Lily," Ethan whispered, leaning down to kiss her forehead, then leaning over to kiss Emma’s soft cheek as she drifted off to sleep. "You saved me, and I will love you forever and ever."

"Forever and ever," Emma echoed sleepily, her small hand reaching out to squeeze her sister’s fingers under the covers.

Ethan stood up quietly and walked to the large bay window overlooking the estate’s gardens. Outside, the night sky was clear, filled with millions of bright, twinkling stars. The quiet house was full of warmth, life, and love.

Ethan placed his hand over his chest, feeling the strong, steady, rhythmic beat of his heart.

He was no longer the cold, lonely billionaire dying alone on the pavement. He was a father, beloved and complete. The impossible favor asked by two starving little girls in a rain-soaked park had indeed come true—not by taking them to heaven, but by bringing a piece of heaven down to Earth for all of them, forever.
