Chapter 6 - The Unseen Shield

Over the next two weeks, the changes in Marcus Harrington’s life were subtle at first, then profound.

He began leaving the office early. He instructed Diana to decline evening networking galas that he had previously attended out of mere routine. He spent his evenings walking through Central Park, watching families play, listening to the hum of the city, feeling connected to the world once more.

He also made subtle adjustments to his household.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, when Rosa arrived, she found that her workload had inexplicably lightened. Marcus had hired an additional commercial deep-cleaning service to handle the heavy labor twice a month, leaving Rosa with only light maintenance duties—though he kept her compensation exactly the same.

When she tried to protest, Marcus simply said, "The apartment is too large for one person, Rosa. I should have done this long ago."

One Tuesday morning in late October, Rosa arrived looking visibly exhausted. Dark circles shadowed her warm brown eyes, and her hands trembled slightly as she set down her bag.

Marcus was sitting at the kitchen island, drinking coffee. He noticed her condition immediately.

"Rosa, are you alright?" he asked, setting his paper down.

Rosa caught herself, putting on a brave smile. "Yes, Mr. Harrington. I am fine. Just... a little tired."

"Where is Sofia today?"

"She is at home with my father," Rosa said, her voice catching slightly. She quickly turned her face away, pretending to inspect a pristine marble counter. "He... he isn't feeling very well today."

Marcus stood up and walked over to her. "What's wrong, Rosa? Tell me."

Rosa bit her lip, battling the tears that threatened to spill over. For weeks she had carried her burden alone, but the genuine concern in Marcus's voice broke her composure.

"My father... he needs a specialized knee replacement and cardiac monitoring," she whispered, wiping a stray tear with the back of her sleeve. "The public clinic pushed his surgery back another six months because of insurance delays. He can barely walk, Mr. Harrington. And the daycare center where Sofia goes... they are raising their tuition next month. I don't know how I'm going to cover both. I've been looking for a second night job, but..."

She stopped, embarrassed, pulling herself together. "I'm sorry, sir. You don't need to hear my problems. I will get to work now."

Marcus watched her step away toward the utility closet. His heart burned with a fierce, protective instinct.

Here was a woman who worked endlessly to keep her family afloat, who gave warmth to a lonely billionaire on his birthday without asking for a dime, now drowning under the cruel bureaucracy of healthcare and childcare systems.

"Rosa," Marcus called out softly.

She turned back.

"Take the rest of the day off," Marcus said.

"Sir? I can finish—"

"I insist," Marcus said, grabbing his coat from the rack. "In fact, call Carl. My driver will take you home."

May you like

"Mr. Harrington, I can't accept that—"

"Rosa," Marcus said gently, walking up to her and looking her straight in the eyes. "You gave me something priceless a few weeks ago. You reminded me that I am a human being. Let me do something small in return."
