PART 2 — “The Commander Comes Home in Silence”

The house was too quiet when Javier stepped inside.

Not peaceful—controlled. Like something inside it was holding its breath.

From upstairs, Brenda’s voice floated again, soft and almost tender.

“Mateo, sweetheart… come down. Your father doesn’t need to know about any of this.”

Javier did not respond.

He motioned once to Trueno.

The German shepherd moved forward silently, nails barely clicking against the marble floor.

Then Javier heard it.

A faint, broken sound.

A baby crying—but weak, uneven, wrong.

Lucía.

Something in his chest tightened violently.

He climbed the stairs without rushing, each step deliberate, controlled. Years of training narrowed his world down to angles, exits, distance, and threat.

At the top of the hallway, Brenda appeared.

She looked nothing like the woman from the neighborhood photos.

Her hair was slightly disheveled. Her smile was too fast, too sharp.

“Oh,” she said softly, as if surprised. “You’re home early.”

Javier’s voice was low.

“Where are my children?”

Brenda tilted her head.

“You mean our children,” she corrected.

Then she stepped aside, revealing Mateo behind her.

The boy was barefoot, shaking, holding something tightly against his chest.

Lucía.

Her tiny face was pale, her body limp in his small arms.

Javier’s world stopped.

“Mateo,” he said quietly, carefully, “bring your sister to me.”

But Brenda laughed.

“She’s fine,” Brenda said quickly. “He’s exaggerating. He always does that. He likes attention.”

Trueno growled again, deeper this time.

Mateo took one step forward—

Brenda grabbed his wrist.

And that was the moment Javier moved.

Not as a husband.

Not as a man.

As a commander.

“Let him go,” Javier said.

His voice was calm enough to freeze the air.

Brenda didn’t.

Instead, she whispered into Mateo’s ear:

“If you go to him, he won’t believe you either. He never does.”

Something inside Javier broke—but his training held him together.

He looked at Mateo.

“Son,” he said, softer now, “don’t be afraid. Give me your sister.”

Mateo hesitated.

Then, in a trembling voice:

“Dad… she didn’t wake up when I shook her.”

That sentence hit harder than any bullet ever could.

Javier stepped forward and gently took Lucía from his son’s arms.

She was cold.

Too cold.

He placed two fingers against her neck.

A faint pulse.

Barely there.

“Call an ambulance,” he snapped.

Brenda’s expression changed instantly.

“No,” she said. “You’re not listening to me. She was fine before he—”

“Enough,” Javier cut her off.

He turned slightly toward the hallway camera.

“Unit response. Now.”

He had already activated it.

Backup was coming.

Brenda’s calm finally cracked.

“You’re going to ruin everything,” she hissed. “I built this family. I fixed your broken life.”

Javier looked at her for a long moment.

May you like

“No,” he said quietly. “You infiltrated it.”

And then police sirens began to echo outside.
