Chapter 6 - Reunited Under the Pines

The afternoon sun was casting golden light across the sprawling property of the Road Guardians clubhouse on the outskirts of Spokane—a sprawling, wood-and-stone lodge surrounded by towering pine trees and secured by a gated, private drive.
Inside, the great room was a hive of warmth and activity. A massive stone fireplace crackled with burning cedar logs. Sarah and several auxiliary members had prepared a comforting feast of homemade chicken soup, warm bread, and apple pie. Banners reading WELCOME HOME, CLAIRE & HARPER hung proudly across the timber rafters.
Harper sat on a comfortable plaid sofa with a woolen blanket draped over her knees, coloring peacefully while keeping her eyes fixed on the front double doors.
At 3:45 p.m., the low rumble of a federal transport van, escorted by two Road Guardians motorcycles, turned down the gravel driveway and rolled to a stop right in front of the lodge doors.
Harper dropped her crayons. The box clattered against the wooden coffee table, but she didn't care. She slid off the sofa and ran toward the door as it swung open.
Bear stepped out of the vehicle first, offering a steadying hand to a fragile, pale woman stepping down onto the gravel.
Claire stopped dead in her tracks. She looked up and saw the small figure standing in the doorway of the lodge, wearing a bright yellow sweater and clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit.
"Harper..." Claire breathed, her voice breaking entirely.
"Mom!" Harper cried out, bursting through the doorway and sprinting across the gravel driveway.

They collided in the center of the courtyard. Claire dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms tightly around her daughter’s small frame, burying her face in Harper’s dark hair as both of them wept tears of pure relief and joy. Bear stood a few feet away, crossing his massive arms over his leather jacket, a quiet, satisfied smile touching the corners of his weathered mouth as he wiped away a stray moisture from his own eye.
Around them, the gathered Road Guardians members respectfully lowered their heads or exchanged quiet, knowing nods. No one spoke. The only sound was the soft rustle of the pine trees in the afternoon breeze and the joyful laughter of a mother and daughter finally reunited.
