Chapter 5 - The Tides of Truth

Over the next two weeks, the fallout from Christmas Night rippled through the family. Richard called me late one evening from a hotel bar. His voice was slurred, stripped of the polished demeanor he usually maintained.
“She’s out of control, Mark,” Richard muttered into the phone. “Since we got back, all she does is talk about how trashy your family is, how your mother is ungrateful... she’s demanding we sell our house and move to the city.”
“Richard,” I said calmly, leaning back against my desk. “Vanessa isn’t the main problem. You are.”
“Me? What did I do?”
“You sit there and let her poison everything,” I said directly. “She talks down to Emily, she belittles Mom, she makes fun of my income, and you just eat your dinner like nothing is happening. You sacrificed your family’s self-respect so you wouldn’t have to deal with her temper.”
There was a long silence on the other end of the line.
“I’m miserable, Mark,” Richard admitted quietly. “I’ve been miserable for five years. She controls everything—my money, my friends, my relationship with you guys. If I don’t agree with her, she threatens to ruin me.”
“Then stand up,” I told my brother. “You’re thirty-nine years old, Richard. You’re a successful man. Stop acting like a hostage in your own life.”
Meanwhile, Emily was discovering a new sense of freedom. Without the looming dread of family gatherings dominated by Vanessa, she threw herself into her work as an interior designer. The tension that had hovered over our household like a dark cloud for years began to dissipate.
One afternoon, Emily called me at work, her voice laced with intrigue. “Mark, you won’t believe who just came into my studio.”
“Who?”
“Vanessa’s sister, Clara.”

I paused. Clara was the black sheep of Vanessa’s wealthy family—a photographer who had cut ties with them years ago. “What did she want?”
“She heard about what happened at Christmas through the grapevine,” Emily said, a note of quiet triumph in her voice. “And Mark... she told me why Vanessa is so obsessed with tearing everyone else down.”
