Chapter 9 - The Promise of Tomorrow

Winter arrived with a gentle blanket of snow that transformed our neighborhood into a quiet, sparkling wonderland.

Maisie had learned how to make snow angels in the front yard, her bright red winter coat looking like a cheerful cherry against the white drifts. Every afternoon after preschool, we would sit by the fireplace with mugs of hot cocoa topped with melting marshmallows, talking about her day, her new friends, and what games we were going to play next.

The ghosts of the past still lingered occasionally in the corners of our minds, but they grew fainter with every passing week. The nightmares became rarer, replaced by peaceful sighs and the steady, rhythmic breathing of a child who finally knew she was safe in the dark.

One evening, as I tucked her into bed under a heavy patchwork quilt I had sewn myself, Maisie reached up and grabbed my hand. Her fingers were warm and steady.

"Grandma?" she whispered softly in the dim light of her nightlight.

"Yes, sweet pea?"

"Are we always going to live together?"

My throat tightened with a wave of deep, abiding love. I leaned down and kissed her forehead, right where the old worries used to live.

May you like

"Always and forever, Maisie," I whispered fiercely. "Nobody is ever taking you away from me. You are my girl, and I am your grandma, and nothing in this world is ever going to change that."

She smiled, her eyes drifting shut as a profound peace settled over her little face. She didn't let go of my hand until she was fast asleep.
