Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at Blackwood Ridge

"Wait!" I yelled, my voice ringing out over the sound of the water. I held up the waterproof case, holding it out over the deep, churning whirlpool beneath the water wheel. "You fire one shot, Miller, and this case goes straight into the intake grate. It’ll be sucked into the subterranean overflow tunnels under the mountain. Good luck finding it before the spring thaw floods the valley."
Miller paused, his arm tensing. The men beside him lowered their rifles slightly, looking to their leader for direction.
"You're bluffing," Miller said, though a flicker of doubt crossed his eyes. "You wouldn't risk the children's lives."
"I'm a desperate man with nothing left to lose but them," I replied, my voice steady, channeling every ounce of courtroom bravado I had ever possessed. "You think I came up here unprepared? I'm an attorney, Miller. Before I left the city, I set a digital timer on my firm's secure server. If I don't check in by midnight, a duplicate set of encrypted files—files Olivia mailed to my office three years ago as a contingency—will automatically be forwarded to the Department of Justice and the FBI."
It was a complete lie, a desperate gamble based on pure bluff, but I delivered it with absolute conviction.
Miller hesitated. The seconds stretched out, agonizingly long, filled only by the roar of the creek and the pounding of my own heart. The corrupt deputy glanced at his men, then back at the case in my hands. The greed and self-preservation in his eyes were waging a silent war.
"You're lying," Miller finally growled, stepping closer. "Olivia didn't trust anyone with those files. Not even you. She wanted to keep you clean."
"She wanted to keep me alive," I corrected him. "But she underestimated how much I love her memory. And she underestimated what I would do to protect the people she died trying to save."
While Miller was distracted by my speech, Clara moved with agonizing slowness behind me. Her hand reached into the mud, her fingers wrapping around the heavy iron tire iron I had dropped when I retrieved the case.
"Shoot him," Miller suddenly ordered his men, his face twisting into a mask of pure rage. "Shoot them all!"

Before the gunmen could raise their rifles, a brilliant flash of blue and red lights erupted from the ridge above us. The piercing wail of sirens shattered the night air, accompanied by the thundering chop of a helicopter rotor blade cutting through the sky. A massive spotlight descended from the heavens, illuminating the entire ravine in brilliant, daylight clarity.
"STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY!" a voice boomed from the helicopter's PA system. "YOU ARE SURROUNDED! LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS AND PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEADS!"
