Chapter 10 - A New Dawn Over Lake Michigan

The wedding was small, private, and breathtakingly beautiful. We held it in the gardens of the estate, surrounded by a small group of trusted friends, including Yuri and Mikhail, who had traded their tactical gear for elegant tuxedos.
My mother, wearing a beautiful dusty-rose dress, walked down the aisle with the assistance of a handsome cane. She had a look of absolute pride and clarity in her eyes as she handed me over to Nikolai.
“Take care of her, Nikolai,” she whispered, her voice steady and clear.
“With my life, Grace,” Nikolai promised, his eyes shining.
The ceremony was a blur of vows, laughter, and tears of happiness. When Nikolai kissed me, cementing our union as husband and wife, the applause of our small gathering echoed through the pine trees, sounding like a song of victory.
Later that evening, as the reception wound down and our guests began to depart, Nikolai and I stood on the balcony of our home, watching the moon reflect over the calm waters of Lake Michigan.
The air was warm, filled with the sweet scent of summer blooms.
“Are you happy, Mrs. Volkova?” Nikolai asked, his arms wrapping around me from behind, his chin resting gently on my shoulder.
“I have never been happier,” I said, leaning back against his strong chest. “For so long, I thought my life would be defined by the pain Derek caused me. I thought I was destined to be a victim, a warning story.”
Nikolai squeezed me tighter. “You were never a warning story, Emma. You are a triumph. A testament to what happens when the darkness tries to break a light that refuses to go out.”
I turned in his arms, looking up into his handsome, scarred face. The man who had entered my ruined apartment like a specter of vengeance was now my husband, my partner, and my greatest peace.
“My name is Emma Volkova,” I whispered, a brilliant smile spreading across my face. “And the day Derek Holt underestimated me was the day he destroyed himself—and the day I found the man who would love me for the rest of my life.”

Nikolai smiled, his gray eyes shining with an infinite, unwavering warmth as he leaned down to kiss me.
Behind us, the lights of Chicago flickered like a sea of stars, welcoming us to a new dawn, a clean slate, and a future built on a foundation of love, courage, and unstoppable grace.
