Chapter 8 - A Promise Made Under the Stars

The city lights twinkled like diamonds scattered across a dark velvet blanket. The cool autumn wind rustled through the potted ivy on the terrace, carrying the faint scent of rain and blooming jasmine.
James poured two glasses of vintage champagne, handing one to Emma. They stood side-by-side, leaning against the glass railing, watching the distant hum of traffic on the bridge below.
“Do you ever think back to that afternoon?” Emma asked quietly, swirling the golden liquid in her glass. “To what would have happened if Sophie hadn't spoken up?”
James turned his head, looking at her profile illuminated by the soft glow of the terrace lights. “I try not to think about it, because it terrifies me. If I had walked past you that day, I would have remained trapped in my own little bubble of wealth and indifference. You and Sophie woke me up, Emma. You taught me that true power isn't about how much capital you accumulate, but how many walls you tear down to let others in.”
Emma turned to face him, her expression tender. “You gave me a second chance at life, James. You gave me back my dignity, my career, and a purpose.”
James set his champagne glass down on the small marble table with a soft clink. He reached out, taking both of Emma’s hands in his. His heart pounded fiercely against his ribs, not with the cold calculation of a corporate merger, but with the raw, fluttering vulnerability of a man deeply, irreversibly in love.
“Emma,” James began, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register. “When you walked into our lives, you didn't just enter as a stranger we helped. You became the missing piece of our family. Sophie loves you like a mother, and I... I love you more than I ever thought possible after closing off my heart for so many years.”
Emma’s breath hitched. Tears sprang to her eyes once more, but these were pure, unadulterated drops of absolute joy.
“James...” she whispered.
James slowly dropped to one knee on the terrace tile, pulling a small, elegant velvet box from his jacket pocket. Inside rested a vintage diamond ring sparkling brilliantly under the starlight.
“Will you marry me, Emma? Will you be a partner to me, and a mother to Sophie, forever and always?”
May you like
Emma let out a soft sob of pure happiness, covering her mouth with her hands before throwing her arms around his neck, pulling him up into a tight, desperate embrace.
“Yes!” she cried out against his shoulder. “Yes, James, a million times yes!”
