Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

The doorknob rattled softly in its socket.

Click. Click.

Patricia didn't knock again. She knew as well as I did that the game of polite neighborly pretense was entirely over. Standing there on the porch, illuminated by the harsh yellow glow of the porch light, she looked less like a human being and more like a cornered animal driven by absolute, unadulterated desperation.

I backed away from the door in absolute silence, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. I reached into my pocket, pulled out my phone, and dialed Marcus’s number with trembling fingers.

"Marcus," I whispered into the receiver as quietly as humanly possible. "She’s here. She’s at my front door right now."

"Stay down, Mark!" Marcus’s voice snapped back through the line, urgent and sharp. "We're two blocks away! We intercepted an alert from a traffic camera near your neighborhood. Do not engage her! Lock yourself in the bedroom with the kids!"

Before I could answer, a loud, metallic crash echoed through the foyer.

She had swung the heavy wrench against the glass panel of the front door. Shards of glass rained down onto the hardwood floor with a sharp, glittering clatter. A gloved hand reached through the jagged opening, flicking the interior deadbolt open with practiced ease.

The front door swung wide open.

"Mark!" Patricia’s voice rang out through the house, sweet and terrifyingly cheerful, cutting through the quiet evening air. "Open up, Mark! Let me talk to my family!"

I didn't run to the bedroom. If I retreated, she would find the children. Instead, I grabbed a heavy wooden umbrella stand from the corner of the hallway, gripped it with both hands, and planted my feet firmly on the floor just outside the kitchen entrance.

Footsteps crunched over the broken glass in the foyer.

Patricia stepped into the hallway, her eyes wild, bloodshot, and fixed entirely on me. The neat, well-groomed woman who had charmed our entire neighborhood was completely gone, replaced by a terrifying apparition of malice and deceit.

"You ruined everything, Mark," she hissed, taking a step forward, the heavy wrench gripped tightly in her hand. "I gave you a family! I took care of your kids! Without me, you would have crumbled into dust after Emily died!"

"You murdered my wife, Patricia," I said, my voice echoing steadily through the hallway, refusing to tremble. "And you tortured my children. Your journals are already in police custody. There is nowhere left for you to run."

For a split second, her eyes widened in shock. The color drained completely from her face. She realized then—truly realized—that her secrets were exposed, her safety net burned to ash.

Instead of breaking down, a dark, horrific smile twisted her lips.

"If I don't get to keep this life," she whispered, raising the heavy wrench high above her head, "then nobody does."

She lunged forward with terrifying speed.
