Chapter 4 - The Warrant and the Web of Lies

The legal machine moves fast when a child’s blood is spilled, but to a father waiting for his son to wake up from surgery, every minute feels like an eternity.
By 2:00 AM, Ethan was out of the operating room. The pediatric surgeon confirmed that the pins had been successfully set in his left arm, and he was now in a full, bright-blue fiberglass cast. He was sleeping peacefully under the effects of pain medication, his little chest rising and falling rhythmically in the quiet hospital room.
Marcus had arrived an hour earlier, bringing me a fresh change of clothes and a warm cup of dark coffee. He sat in the corner arm chair, his massive frame folded neatly, playing the role of a silent guardian.
Detective Miller entered the room quietly, motioning for me to step out into the hallway.
"How is the boy?" Miller asked, pulling a small notepad from his coat pocket.
"He's stable. Sleeping," I said, rubbing my exhausted eyes. "What's happening with Kyle? Is he behind bars?"
Detective Miller nodded grimly. "Kyle Vance—real name Kyle Rayner—is currently in holding. When we ran his prints at the station, a whole tree of red flags lit up."
"What kind of flags?"
"Rayner has two prior convictions for aggravated assault and felony domestic violence in two different counties," Miller revealed, his jaw tightening. "He was on active probation. He lied about his identity to your ex-wife, calling himself 'Kyle Vance' to hide his record. But here’s where it gets worse, David."
I leaned against the cool wall, bracing myself. "Tell me."
"When my officers searched the house under the emergency crime scene warrant, we found more than just the aluminum bat with your son's blood on it," Miller said softly. "We found three unregistered firearms in the master closet, a substantial amount of illicit narcotics packaged for distribution, and several fake IDs."
I felt a cold sweat break out on the back of my neck. My son had been living in a stash house for an armed felon and drug dealer.
"And Lena?" I demanded. "What did she know?"
"We brought her in for questioning three hours ago," Miller replied. "At first, she tried to cover for him, claiming she didn't know about the drugs or his real name. But when we showed her the search warrant inventory and threatened her with felony conspiracy charges, she broke down."
Miller pulled out a audio recording device and played a short segment of Lena’s interrogation.
(Lena's voice through the speaker, frantic and sobbing: "I knew he had a temper! I knew he did things on the side! But he paid the rent! He paid for everything after David moved out! I couldn't afford the house on my own... I was scared to leave him!")
I squeezed my eyes shut, my fists trembling. She had traded our son’s safety for rent money and a comfortable lifestyle. She had prioritized a monster's financial support over the life of the child we had brought into this world together.
"The District Attorney is filing formal charges against Kyle Rayner for First-Degree Child Abuse, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Possession of Illegal Firearms, and Narcotics Distribution," Detective Miller stated firmly. "His bail has been set at two million dollars. He isn't getting out."
"And Lena?"
"She is being processed for Felony Child Endangerment and Obstruction of Justice. The CPS officer, Ms. Higgins, has already drafted the petition for emergency suspension of all her parental rights."
Marcus stepped out of the room, listening to the detective's update. He placed a heavy hand on my shoulder. "So the legal trash is being swept up. What's the next step for Ethan?"
"The next step," I said, looking back through the small glass window at my resting son, "is making sure she never gets within a mile of him again. I’m calling my attorney right now."
I pulled out my phone and dialed Arthur Vance—no relation to the surgeon—one of the top family law attorneys in the state.
"Arthur," I said when he picked up on the third ring, his voice groggy. "It's David Reynolds. It happened. I need an emergency court injunction, full physical and legal custody, and a complete termination of Lena's visitation rights before the sun comes up."

"David? What happened?" Arthur’s voice instantly sharpened into professional focus.
"My son is in the hospital with a broken arm because of her boyfriend," I said, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. "I have the police report, the CPS hold, and the surgeon’s records. We go to war at dawn."
