Chapter 4 - The Dead Speak

The study was so silent that the sound of Grace's recorded voice felt like thunder against the walls. Lily and Emma stood mesmerized, staring at the image of the mother Lily barely remembered and Emma had never truly known.
"Marcus," Grace continued on the video, tears slipping down her pale cheeks as she cradled the tiny infant. "My father discovered the truth three months ago. He found out about the offshore accounts, about the evidence I gathered regarding his involvement in the syndicate deaths seven years ago. He realized I was going to turn it over to the Federal Prosecutors."
I felt the room tilt. Arthur Vance wasn't just a corrupt retired judge. For years, there had been rumors of a shadowy figure directing organized crime in the Midwest—a man known only as 'The Arbiter' who controlled judges, politicians, and police chiefs alike. I had thought it was a myth.
It wasn't a myth. It was my father-in-law.
"When I went into labor early," Grace sobbed on the video, her hand trembling as she stroked the baby's head, "Arthur came to the hospital. He told me that if I released the files, he would make sure you and our babies disappeared. He said he would let one child live as a bargaining chip to keep you compliant and broken, but the other... he threatened to take the other away forever."
I gripped the edge of the desk so hard the wood groaned beneath my fingers.
"I had to make a choice, Marcus," Grace whispered, looking directly into the camera lens. "I knew you were strong enough to protect Lily in the light. But I knew Arthur would always be watching her. So I begged Karen to help me. We forged the medical records. When the second baby was born—Emma—we hid her. We let Arthur believe she died at birth, so he wouldn't search for her. Karen took her into hiding. The evidence against my father is encrypted inside this drive. It contains every transaction, every name, every bribe he ever paid."
Grace took a deep, shuddering breath, her eyes brimming with maternal agony. "Marcus, I am dying. The internal bleeding won't stop. But I die knowing that our daughters have a father who will tear down heaven and earth for them. Take the key. Expose Arthur. Bring our family back together. I love you, Marcus. Forever."
The screen faded to black.
Silence fell over the room. Lily was weeping softly, holding onto Emma's pajamas. Emma looked up at me, a single tear slipping down her small, pale cheek.
"Is Mommy gone?" Emma asked softly.
I walked over to them, dropped to my knees, and pulled both of my daughters into my arms. I held them so tightly I could feel their tiny hearts beating together in unison—a rhythm that had been split apart by a monster and brought back together by a miracle.
"Yes, sweetheart," I whispered into Emma's hair. "Mommy is gone. But she saved you. And now, I'm going to finish what she started."
I looked up at Frank over the girls' shoulders. His face was set in stone, his eyes burning with absolute loyalty.
"Frank," I said, my voice dropping into a register colder than ice. "Call the team. Call everyone we have on retainer. We aren't going to court."
"What are your orders, Marcus?" Frank asked, taking out his encrypted phone.
"Arthur has Karen," I said, standing up and looking down at the encrypted files on the laptop screen—files containing enough evidence to ruin every corrupt official in the city. "He thinks he holds all the cards. He thinks I'm still the grieving widower he manipulated seven years ago."

I closed the laptop and tucked it into my jacket.
"We are going to Lake Forest," I said. "And we are bringing down the entire house of Vance."
