Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at the Water’s Edge

"Between us?" Julian laughed, a bitter, unhinged sound that echoed across the quiet lake. "Oh, Rowan, you arrogant corporate prick. You thought you could just fire me, strip my stock options, and blackball me from the entire Nashville financial sector without consequences?"
"You embezzled millions from my firm using Delaney as a proxy," Rowan fired back, keeping his voice steady while frantically listening for any sign of the police tactical team in his earpiece. “We’re thirty yards out, holding position, wait for my signal,” Vance’s voice whispered faintly.
"Delaney didn't just do it for me, Rowan. She did it because she hated you just as much as I did," Julian taunted, stepping closer to Delaney and roughly grabbing her by the hair to yank her head back. Delaney let out a muffled, agonized cry behind the tape. "She wanted the high life. She wanted millions to jet-set around the world, and your boring, workaholic lifestyle wasn't cutting it anymore. But then she got greedy. She tried to double-cross me and keep the final offshore transfer keys for herself. So, I taught her a little lesson."
"You left my children to die!" Rowan roared, surging forward instinctively.
Julian instantly snapped the pistol up, leveling the barrel straight at Rowan’s chest. "Ah-ah-ah! One more step and the mother of your children takes a bullet right between the eyes. Do you really want that on your conscience?"
Rowan froze, his fists clenching so hard his fingernails broke the skin of his palms. "You're a coward, Julian. Using kids and blackmail to settle a corporate grudge."
"Call it what you want, Rowan. Smart business," Julian grinned maliciously, pulling a small USB flash drive from his pocket. "Here is the master encryption key to your company's remaining offshore accounts. Transfer the remaining fifty million dollars into my Swiss account right now on your phone, or watch Delaney take a swim she won't come back from."
“Now, Rowan! Stall him!” the earpiece crackled sharply.
Rowan pulled out his smartphone with trembling fingers, tapping the screen slowly. "Fifty million is a lot of data to transfer, Julian. It takes a minute to authenticate through the corporate firewall."
"Hurry up! I'm losing my patience!" Julian snapped, his eyes darting nervously toward the dark treeline behind Rowan.
"You know, Julian," Rowan said, stalling for every precious second, "you were always brilliant with numbers, but you never understood people."
"Shut up and transfer the—"
CRACK!
A blinding flash grenade detonated from the roof of the boathouse, flooding the wooden deck with searing white light and a deafening concussion wave. Julian shrieked, stumbling backward and dropping his pistol as temporary blindness took hold.
"FBI! Metro PD! Drop your weapon!" roared Detective Vance as a half-dozen tactical officers swarmed out of the shadows like shadows, tackling Julian to the wooden deck and pinning him hard against the boards.
Julian thrashed and screamed obscenities as steel handcuffs snapped securely around his wrists, his corporate vengeance completely unraveling in a matter of seconds.
Rowan didn't wait. He sprinted past the chaos straight to the chair, ripping the duct tape off Delaney’s mouth and untying the ropes around her wrists.
Delaney collapsed forward into Rowan's arms, sobbing hysterically, coughing and gasping for air.

"Rowan... I'm so sorry... I was so stupid..." she sobbed into his coat.
Rowan held her, feeling a complex storm of pity, anger, and profound exhaustion wash over him. He didn't forgive her—not yet, and maybe not ever for what she had put Micah and Elsie through. But the nightmare was finally over.
