Chapter 7 - The Court of Public Opinion

The video on the screen showed the pristine, white living room. Sarah was standing near a beautifully set table, smiling radiantly at a high-definition camera.

"So, guys, keeping your home clean with little ones is all about teaching them accountability," Sarah’s recorded voice boomed through the courtroom speakers, sweet and melodic.

Then, the camera captured Chloe entering the frame. She was holding a small organic juice box. Her foot caught on the edge of the thick rug, and she tripped. The dark red juice splattered across the white bouclé fabric and the front of her dress.

The transformation in Sarah was instantaneous and terrifying. The bright, loving smile vanished, replaced by a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.

"Cut the feed!" Sarah yelled on the video, turning toward her assistant off-camera. "Are you kidding me? You stupid, clumsy little brat!"

The assistant must have turned off the primary recording monitor, but the secondary security and background ambient cameras kept rolling. The video showed Sarah marching over to Chloe. The little girl shrunk back, her hands raised defensively. Sarah grabbed Chloe by both forearms, lifting the eight-year-old entirely off her feet by her wrists, shaking her violently.

"Do you know how much this sponsorship was worth?!" Sarah screamed into the little girl's face. "You did this on purpose! You are a selfish, miserable little brat! Don't you dare cry! If you ruin my schedule, I swear to God I will make sure your father never comes back to this house!"

Chloe was sobbing, her tiny body shaking as Sarah slammed her down into a chair, squeezing her wrists one last time—leaving the deep marks that would later turn purple—before walking away to inspect the rug, leaving the little girl weeping in the corner.

The video cut to black.

The silence in the courtroom was absolute. Sarah had buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking, but this time, there were no cameras to appreciate her tears. Her attorney looked down at his legal pad, completely defeated.

Judge Thomas lowered her glasses. Her eyes were burning with a quiet, judicial fury.

"Mrs. Vance," the judge said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "You have built a career telling the world how to love children, while treating your own daughter like a prop to be abused when she doesn't perform to your financial specifications. You lied to this court, you lied to the police, and you used your public platform to defame a man who was doing nothing less than saving his daughter from a monster."

"Your Honor..." Sarah sobbed, standing up. "It was the stress... the pressure of the business..."

"Silence," Judge Thomas commanded. "Effective immediately, temporary sole legal and physical custody of Chloe Vance is awarded to the father, Mark Vance. A permanent restraining order is issued against the mother. Mrs. Vance will have zero contact—no phone calls, no letters, no digital communication—until a full psychological evaluation is completed, and even then, any future contact will be strictly supervised at the court's discretion."

The judge slammed her gavel down. Crack.

"Furthermore," Judge Thomas added, "I am ordering the immediate cessation of the minor child’s likeness on all social media platforms associated with the mother. If I see so much as a pixel of Chloe’s face on the internet again, Mrs. Vance, you will be watching your follower count from a jail cell. We are adjourned."
