Chapter 8 - The Price of Arrogance

The prosecution’s case concluded with expert medical testimony from Dr. Vance. Using large display monitors mounted in the courtroom, he presented 3D renderings of my X-rays alongside biomechanical force models. He demonstrated to the jury that the structural failure of my radius required a minimum of seventy-five foot-pounds of rotational torque—an amount of physical force completely impossible to generate through an accidental slip or fall.

Furthermore, a forensic expert testified that Sarah’s specialized martial arts and athletic training meant she possessed explicit knowledge of joint mechanics and anatomical vulnerabilities, making her actions a calculated use of excessive force rather than a careless mistake.

The jury deliberate for less than ninety minutes.

When the court reconvened, the jury foreman stood up and read the verdict: Guilty of Felony Assault in the First Degree, and Guilty of Aggravated Domestic Violence.

Sarah’s defense attorney turned pale. My mother let out a strangled sob from the gallery, burying her face in her hands, while my father stared blankly at the floor. Sarah stood frozen beside her counsel, her jaw slightly open, as if her mind was fundamentally incapable of processing the fact that her strength and charm had failed to save her.

Before sentencing, the judge delivered a scorching assessment from the bench.

"In my fifteen years on this bench," the judge declared, looking down sternly at Sarah, "I have rarely witnessed such a complete, stunning absence of remorse. You took advantage of your physical strength to inflict severe, deliberate harm upon your own sister, and you relied upon a toxic network of familial enablement to cover your tracks. Your arrogance in believing you were above the law is entirely unacceptable."

The judge sentenced Sarah to four years in the state correctional facility, with a mandatory minimum of two and a half years to be served before becoming eligible for parole consideration.

As court bailiffs stepped forward, ordered Sarah to turn around, and placed her in wrist restraints, I watched from the second row of the gallery. She looked back at me one last time over her shoulder as she was led toward the holding cell door. Her eyes were filled with tears, her composure entirely shattered.
