Part 2 — The Secret Beneath the Plaster

Maya didn't sleep.
She replayed Victor's words over and over in her mind.
"The kid's too scared."
She had heard voices like that before—in emergency rooms, in courtrooms, in whispered police interviews. Calm. Controlled. Confident. The voices of people who believed fear could erase the truth.
At six the next morning, Victor left for an investment conference in Chicago. Claire watched his car disappear down the street before finally letting herself breathe.
Noah refused breakfast.
He sat at the table staring at the cast wrapped around his arm as though it belonged to someone else.
"It's hurting again?" Claire asked gently.
Noah shook his head.
"It isn't hurting."
He swallowed.
"It's talking."
Claire blinked.
"What do you mean?"
Before Noah could answer, Maya quietly interrupted.
"Mrs. Lawson... may I check his circulation?"
Claire looked surprised.
"You know how?"
Maya hesitated only a moment.
"I was a pediatric trauma nurse before I became a nanny."
Claire stared at her.
"You never told me."
"You never asked."
The silence that followed was uncomfortable.
Finally Claire nodded.
"Please."
Maya knelt beside Noah.
His fingers were ice cold.
Much colder than they should have been.
She pressed gently against the edge of the cast.
Noah whimpered instantly.
"Don't..."
"Did Victor tell you not to let anyone touch it?"
A tiny nod.
Maya examined the plaster carefully.
The emergency room had supposedly applied it three days ago.
But this wasn't hospital-grade fiberglass.
The inside layer felt uneven.
There was a strange hardness near the wrist.
Almost...
Artificial.
Her heart began pounding.
"Claire," Maya said quietly.
"When was his follow-up appointment scheduled?"
"Next week."
"No."
Maya looked directly into her eyes.
"We're not waiting."
An hour later they arrived at a private orthopedic clinic across town.
Victor had specifically forbidden Claire from taking Noah anywhere else.
That alone made her drive faster.
Dr. Evan Brooks reviewed the X-rays from the original hospital.
Within seconds his expression changed.
"I'm sorry..."
He frowned.
"These aren't Noah's."
Claire froze.
"What?"
"The patient ID was altered."
He looked at Noah's arm.
"And according to these images... this fracture healed years ago."
"There shouldn't even be a cast."
The room went silent.
"What?" Claire whispered again.
Dr. Brooks carefully cut into the plaster.
Layer after layer fell away.
Then the saw stopped.
"What on earth..."
Hidden beneath the soft padding was a black plastic shell.
It had been molded tightly around Noah's wrist.
Tiny wires ran underneath it.
A blinking green light flashed once every few seconds.
Claire covered her mouth.
"No..."
Maya felt sick.
"It isn't medical."
Dr. Brooks carefully disconnected the device.
Noah gasped.
Instantly his fingers relaxed.
For the first time in days, he smiled.
"It stopped."
Claire grabbed him, sobbing.
"What is it?"
The doctor shook his head.
"I've never seen anything like this inside a cast."
Maya examined the object.
No larger than a deck of cards.
Custom built.
Hidden perfectly.
On its side...
A tiny microphone.
And a GPS transmitter.
Someone hadn't immobilized Noah's arm.
They had imprisoned him.
Two hours later Maya sat inside the parking garage listening to the recording she'd captured the night before.
Victor's voice was unmistakable.
"One more scream and your mother signs everything away."
She forwarded the file to a former colleague.
Detective Lena Ortiz.
Within three minutes her phone rang.
"Maya."
"I need you to tell me this isn't another custody case."
"It isn't."
Maya looked toward Claire hugging Noah inside the clinic.
"It's much worse."
That evening Victor called home.
"How's my little patient?"
Claire forced herself to sound calm.
"Still resting."
"Good."
"And the cast?"
Claire looked at the shattered pieces hidden inside a garbage bag.
"It's exactly where you left it."
Victor smiled.
"Perfect."
He had no idea someone else had already opened it.
And what they found was about to destroy everything he had built.
Because hidden inside the tracking device...
Detective Ortiz had just discovered an encrypted memory chip.
And whatever was stored on it had been important enough for Victor to torture a seven-year-old to protect.
The file contained only one word.
LEDGER.
And beneath it...
Thirty-seven names.
May you like
Eight of them already dead.
