Chapter 6 - Sirens in the Suburbs

The snow was falling thicker now, blanketing the manicured lawns of my mother’s upscale suburban neighborhood in a layer of pristine, undisturbed white. That illusion of purity was shattered the moment two unmarked police cruisers and a standard patrol car turned sharply down the cul-de-sac, their emergency lights painting the brick-and-siding houses in angry flashes of crimson and blue.

Mark sat in the front passenger seat of Detective Vance’s vehicle, his arms crossed over his chest, watching through the frosted windshield as the cars pulled up directly behind Diane’s luxury SUV in the driveway.

“Stay in the vehicle, Mr. Bennett,” Vance instructed as he pulled the shift into park. “Let us handle the initial contact.”

“Just make sure they don’t slip out the back,” Mark replied, his voice flat and cold.

Vance and three uniform officers stepped out into the freezing night air, their heavy boots crunching against the fresh snow. They walked up the cobblestone path to the double front doors of the house. Vance didn't bother with the polite doorbell chime; he raised his hand and delivered three heavy, authoritative raps against the polished mahogany wood.

Bang, bang, bang.

Inside, shadows flickered past the frosted glass sidelights. After a tense moment, the lock clicked, and the door swung open.

Diane stood in the entryway, wrapped in an expensive cashmere shawl, her face pale and drawn. Behind her, peeking out from the hallway with eyes wide like a cornered animal, was Vanessa, still wearing her ruined red holiday dress.

“Can I help you officers?” Diane demanded, attempting to put on a mask of haughty indignation, though her voice shook uncontrollably. “This is a private residence, and it’s Christmas Eve—is there some sort of mistake?”

“Mrs. Diane Bennett?” Detective Vance asked, flashing his silver shield under the porch light.

“Yes, I am. What is this about?”

“You need to step outside, ma'am,” Vance said, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Both you and your daughter, Vanessa Bennett. You are being placed under arrest.”

“Arrest?!” Diane shrieked, her voice cracking as she clutched her chest. “Are you out of your mind? On what grounds? What kind of ridiculous prank is this?”

“It’s no prank, Diane,” a deep, gravelly voice cut through the cold air.

Mark pushed open the passenger door of the cruiser and stepped out into the driveway, walking up the snowy path toward the porch. The porch light caught the hard, unforgiving lines of his face, the dark smudges of soot still lingering on his skin. When Diane and Vanessa saw him stride toward them, the last vestige of their color vanished completely.

“Mark? What are you... where is Laura?” Vanessa whimpered, shrinking back against the interior wall.

“Laura is with our daughter, who is currently undergoing treatment for second-degree burns caused by your mother,” Mark said, stopping just at the foot of the porch steps, looking down at them like a judge presiding over an execution. “And you two are going to jail.”
