Chapter 5 - The Raid on Christmas

The flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the snow-covered windows of Beverly’s house shattered the illusion of holiday perfection faster than a brick through glass.

I sat in the back of Detective Miller’s unmarked cruiser, holding Ruby close against my chest. Ruby had fallen into an exhausted, trauma-induced sleep, her small fingers clutching the fabric of my sweater. Outside, the front door of the grand house flew open, and police officers streamed up the steps.

Through the windshield, I watched the chaos unfold.

Mallerie was the first one brought out, pushed gently against the side of a patrol car, her face twisted in utter disbelief and blind panic. She was screaming that it was a "joke," that people online "took things too far," that her account had been hacked. The officer didn't listen; he slapped the cuffs on her wrists with cold efficiency.

Frank came next. The proud, imposing patriarch of the family looked old, shrunken, and gray as two officers escorted him down the porch steps, his head bowed against the biting winter wind.

And finally, Beverly.

She walked out with her chin held high, her lips pressed into a thin, furious line of indignation. She looked around as if expecting someone—anyone—to step forward and apologize for the massive inconvenience being caused to her festive gathering. When her eyes scanned the line of police cruisers and locked onto mine through the glass of Detective Miller’s car, her expression shifted. For a split second, I saw a flash of raw, unadulterated panic in her eyes. She opened her mouth as if to shout something, but an officer nudged her forward, guiding her into the back of a van.

Trevor stumbled out behind them, jacketless, his hair disheveled, looking completely unmoored. He caught sight of our car and started running toward us, desperation written all over his face.

Detective Miller rolled down her window just an inch as Trevor reached the vehicle, pounding frantically on the glass.

“Let me talk to her! Please!” Trevor pleaded, tears freezing on his cheeks. “I didn't know! I swear to God, I was in the garage fixing the plumbing! Mom told me Ruby was just taking a nap upstairs because she ate too much sugar!”

“Mr. Vance,” Detective Miller said through the crack in the window, her voice cutting like a razor. “Step away from the vehicle. You can make your statement down at the precinct.”

“Where are they taking my family?” he cried out, collapsing against the door frame.

“Your family is under arrest for felony child abuse, conspiracy, and public humiliation,” Detective Miller replied coldly, rolling the window back up. She put the car in gear and pulled away from the curb, leaving the ruined holiday celebration behind us in the snow.
