Chapter 4 - Echoes in the Marble

The chandeliers flickered as security officers immediately cut the primary power, plunging the grand ballroom into amber emergency lighting. Crimson warning lights rotated silently along the perimeter walls, casting long, demonic shadows across the panicked crowd.

Alessandro did not take cover. He shoved Marco’s arm aside, his posture rigid, his gaze locked onto the dark overhang of the second-floor mezzanine.

“Don't let them leave the estate!” Alessandro roared. His voice cut through the screams like a war horn. “Lock down the gates! Gabriel, seal the ventilation and the sub-basement tunnels! No one exits this property alive until I have a name!”

Above them, a dark figure dressed in tactical grey vaulted over the polished bronze railing of the balcony, dropping twelve feet down onto the top of a grand piano. The instrument screamed in a jarring chord of snapped wires and splintered wood. The figure rolled off the piano, hit the floor, and sprinted toward the rear service corridor.

“Cover the Don!” Marco barked, firing two rounds into the plaster above the fleeing assassin’s head to drive him off course.

The assassin was fast—inhumanly fast—moving with the fluid precision of a professional contractor, not a street thug. He carried a compact, suppressed submachine gun strapped to his chest and wore a thermal-mask that completely obscured his facial features.

As the assassin reached the hallway leading to the kitchens, Sophia Romano was standing near the doorway, holding Lily tightly against her chest, paralyzed by terror.

The assassin did not hesitate. He raised his arm, using the heavy iron barrel of his weapon to strike Sophia across the shoulder to clear his path.

Sophia screamed, falling backward onto the tile, but she kept her body twisted, absorbing the brunt of the fall to protect her child. Lily cried out as they hit the floor.

Seeing Sophia struck triggered something primal within Alessandro.

With speed that belied his massive frame, Alessandro crossed the marble floor in six long strides. He didn't draw a gun; he picked up a heavy, silver-plated ice bucket from an abandoned table and hurled it with terrifying force.

The heavy bucket struck the assassin full in the chest, breaking his stride and knocking the weapon from his grip.

The assassin skidded across the damp tile of the service hallway, recovering instantly to his feet, pulling a six-inch combat blade from his belt. He didn't try to fight Alessandro; he turned to run toward the back exit that led to the estate’s underground wine cellars and drainage network.

Alessandro caught him at the threshold.

He grabbed the assassin by the back of his tactical vest, slamming him backward into the brick wall with enough force to crack the mortar. The assassin slashed wildly with his knife, cutting a long tear through Alessandro’s custom suit jacket, drawing a line of red across the Don’s forearm.

Alessandro didn't even flinch.

He grabbed the assassin’s wrist, twisted it inward until the bone snapped with a wet pop, and drove his own knee brutally into the man’s ribs. The knife clattered to the floor.

Alessandro pinned the man against the brick wall by his throat, his large hand squeezing until the assassin’s breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps. With his free hand, Alessandro ripped the thermal mask off the man’s face.

The face beneath was unfamiliar—pale, covered in tactical scars, with cold, gray eyes that showed no fear, only cold calculation.

“Who sent you?” Alessandro growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble from the back of his chest.

The assassin choked out a wet laugh. Blood stained his teeth. “You think... you think this was about... the Rossi family, Moretti? Look closer... at your own house...”

Before Alessandro could tighten his grip to force an answer, the assassin’s eyes rolled back into his head. His body went limp, his jaw clenching tightly in a sudden, violent spasm. A fine white foam began to bubbled from the corners of his mouth.

“Cyanide capsule,” Marco yelled, rushing down the hallway with three guards behind him, weapons raised. “In the molar!”

Alessandro dropped the dead weight of the assassin onto the floor. The man’s body twitched twice and was still.

Alessandro stood over the corpse, his suit sleeve soaked in his own blood, his chest heaving. He turned back toward the hallway.

Sophia was sitting against the wall, weeping quietly, holding a terrified Lily in her arms. The child was burying her face in her mother’s shoulder, her small body trembling violently.

Alessandro walked over to them. He dropped to his knees once more, ignoring the sharp pain in his sliced arm. He took his silk pocket square from his ruined jacket and gently pressed it against a small cut on Sophia’s forehead where she had struck the floor.

“Are you hurt?” Alessandro asked softly, his voice completely dropping the violent edge it had held a moment before.

“I... I am okay, sir,” Sophia sobbed, her voice trembling. “Lily... is Lily okay?”

Alessandro looked at the little girl. Lily peeked out from behind her mother’s arm, her brown eyes filled with tears, looking at the red stain on Alessandro’s arm.

“You were very brave, Lily,” Alessandro said gently. He reached out with two clean fingers and lightly touched her small chin. “You saved my son tonight. You saved all of us.”

Lily sniffled, wiping her nose on her sleeve. “The man... on the phone...” she whispered.

Alessandro leaned closer. “What about him, little one?”

“He wasn't the man with the gun,” Lily whimpered. “The man on the phone... had a gold ring. A big green stone ring. Like the one on your desk.”

Alessandro’s body went completely motionless.

The green stone ring—a raw, emerald signet ring—was not a piece of commercial jewelry. It was the historical mark of the Moretti inner council. Only four such rings existed in the entire world.

One was on Alessandro’s right hand. One had been buried with his father. One belonged to Marco. And the fourth belonged to the family’s head legal advisor and treasurer, Victor Vance.
