Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Hallway

"Dr. Jenkins?" the taller of the two men asked. He had a sharp, military haircut and a small scar running through his left eyebrow. He held up a gold badge that identified him as Special Agent Miller from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The man beside him was Agent Vance—no relation to the surgeon—who kept his hands folded neatly in front of his suit jacket.

"Yes," I said, rubbing the bridge of my nose where the goggles had left a deep red indentation. "If you're here about the boy, he's out of surgery. He's stable, but he's going to be in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for at least a week."

"We're not just here about the boy's medical status, Doctor," Agent Miller said, lowering his voice as a group of nurses walked past. "We're here about what you pulled out of that cast. Where is the evidence now?"

"It's locked in the ER narcotics safe under maximum security," I replied firmly. "My charge nurse has the only key override besides the hospital administrator. Now, someone needs to tell me what the hell is going on. Why was an eight-year-old child chained inside his own medical cast?"

Miller exchanged a brief look with his partner, then motioned toward a private consultation room down the hall. Once the door clicked shut behind us, he pulled out a tablet and brought up a photograph of Martha Harris. Only, the name printed underneath her picture wasn't Martha. It read: Elena Vanceva.

"For the past three years, the Bureau has been tracking an international human trafficking and money laundering syndicate operating out of the Chicago suburbs," Miller explained. "They use legitimate front businesses—mostly high-end medical clinics and private transport companies—to move illicit funds and sensitive intelligence. The woman you know as Martha Harris is the wife of the syndicate's chief financial officer, Victor Harris."

"And Noah?" I asked, my heart sinking.

"Noah is their biological son," Miller said quietly. "Two weeks ago, Victor Harris attempted to defect to federal authorities. He stole the syndicate's primary encrypted ledgers and cold-storage cryptocurrency drives—the very items you found today. But before he could hand them over, he disappeared. We believe he was eliminated."

"So his mother... his own mother did that to him?" The disgust in my voice was palpable.

"Elena knew the syndicate was hunting for the data," Agent Vance joined in. "She knew her home would be raided, her bank accounts seized, and her vehicles searched. She needed a hiding place that no border guard, no police officer, and no rival cartel member would ever think to check. A child's broken arm, sealed inside a permanent medical device, was the perfect vault."

"She was planning to flee the country with him tonight," Miller added. "We intercepted a private flight manifest listing her and the boy bound for a non-extradition country in Eastern Europe. If you hadn't cut that cast off today, Dr. Jenkins, that boy would have died on that plane from septic shock, and the syndicate's deepest secrets would have vanished with her."

Suddenly, the red emergency phone on the wall of the consultation room began to ring. I snatched it off the cradle.

"Dr. Jenkins," Clara's voice came through the line, gasping for air. "You need to get down to the PICU right now. There's a man here... he claims he's a specialist transferred from Chicago General to oversee Noah's recovery. But Sarah... he doesn't have the right credentials, and he’s asking where the safe is."
