Chapter 9 - The Expansive Table

Three weeks later.

The early December air was crisp and cold, carrying the faint scent of fireplace smoke and upcoming snow. The Whitfield house was illuminated with warm holiday lights hanging from the eaves, casting a soft, golden glow across the front porch.

Inside, the house was alive with sound, warmth, and motion.

In the living room, Clara—now weighing a healthy five pounds, eight ounces, and fully discharged from the NICU two days prior—lay peacefully in a bassinet by the window, wrapped in a pink knitted blanket.

In the kitchen, the air was thick with the rich scents of roasted turkey, garlic mashed potatoes, and freshly baked cinnamon pies.

Nora stood at the kitchen island, checking off items on a clipboard. Her face had regained its healthy color, her energy returned, and her heart lighter than it had been in years. Beside her sat three thick folders filled with insurance documents.

Through her relentless advocacy and expert knowledge of medical billing codes, Nora had successfully appealed both her own out-of-network charge and a major portion of Elena Vance's NICU bill, saving both families thousands of dollars.

"Dinner is almost ready!" Evan called out from the dining room, where he was unfolding extra leaves to extend the large wooden dining table.

The front doorbell rang, and Evan opened it to admit David, Elena, and Mia.

Elena was walking without her cane now, looking glowing and healthy. In her arms, she carried a tightly wrapped blue bundle—baby Leo Vance, born via successful scheduled C-section ten days earlier, healthy and strong.

"Look who's here!" Evan greeted them warmly, helping Elena with her coat.

Mia immediately kicked off her purple sneakers and darted straight to the bassinet in the living room, hovering over Clara with pure big-sister devotion. "Hi Clara! I brought you a present!" She pulled a small, plush moon key chain—identical to the one on her backpack—out of her pocket and set it gently beside the baby's feet.

David walked into the kitchen, carrying two large cider bottles, and looked at Nora. "Tell me you brought the good news."

Nora pointed to the top folder on her clipboard with a triumphant grin. "The hospital's charity care grant approved your remaining balance, David. Zero out of pocket for the NICU stay."

David stared at her, then threw his arms around Nora in a tight, overwhelming hug. "You are an absolute miracle worker, Nora. I don't even know how to thank you."

"You can thank me by eating three helpings of mashed potatoes," Nora laughed, squeezing his arm.

Elena walked over, carefully holding her newborn son, and sat beside Nora at the island. Nora looked down at little Leo Vance, feeling a profound, peaceful stillness settle deep in her soul. Two years ago, the name 'Leo' had brought her tears and heartbreak. Today, looking at this healthy, snuggling newborn carrying the same name, she felt only warmth and hope.

"He's beautiful, Elena," Nora whispered.

"He wouldn't be here without the support of this family," Elena said softly, reaching over to hold Nora’s hand. "We went into that hospital room three weeks ago feeling completely alone and terrified. We came out with a family."

"Alright everyone!" Evan announced, stepping into the kitchen with a serving platter. "Table is set!"
