Part 5: Breaking Point

The explosion of safety glass echoed through the small room like a gunshot.

Dr. Wells stopped mid-stride. He looked down at the glittering shower of fragments scattered across his polished leather shoes, then slowly raised his gaze to meet Audrey’s furious, sweat-beaten face.

“That was entirely unnecessary, Mrs. Mercer,” Wells said, his voice dropping its polite veneer, revealing a cold, razor-sharp edge beneath. “You are putting your child at extreme risk. If you rupture your amniotic sac in this sealed wing, there is no obstetrician within three miles who can reach you before septic shock sets in.”

Audrey gripped the heavy steel pole with both hands, her knuckles white. Another contraction hit her—long, grinding, and intense—causing her vision to blur at the edges. She bit down hard on her lower lip until she tasted copper, refusing to cry out.

“Try me,” Audrey panted, her voice trembling but resolute. “I’ve faced worse than you in county court, Wells. And I always win in the end.”

Behind her, Marcus scrambled back to his feet, his massive frame trembling with a mixture of adrenaline and sheer paternal fury. He didn't say a word. He simply charged forward like a freight train, his shoulder lowered directly toward the doctor’s chest.

Dr. Wells tried to step aside, but the shattered glass underfoot betrayed him. His heel slipped on a rolling plastic syringe cap.

Marcus’s shoulder caught the doctor squarely in the ribs, sending both men crashing through the open doorway of the adjoining private bathroom. A horrific sound of breaking porcelain and thrashing limbs echoed from inside, followed by a heavy, breathless grunt.

“Dad!” Caleb shrieked, scrambling off the bed and running straight toward Audrey.

Audrey dropped the heavy IV pole, dropping to her knees despite the agonizing pull in her lower abdomen, and wrapped her arms tightly around the trembling boy. He buried his face in her shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably.

“I’ve got you,” Audrey whispered, stroking his damp hair. “You’re safe, Caleb. I’m not letting him take you.”

The bathroom door swung open.

Marcus stumbled backward out into the room, gasping for air, one hand clutching a bloody forearm where a piece of ceramic had sliced his skin. Behind him, Dr. Wells lay sprawled awkwardly across the shattered tiles of the bathroom floor, unmoving, his rimless glasses cracked in half beside his outstretched hand.

“Is he... is he dead?” Marcus wheezed, wiping sweat from his forehead.

“Unconscious,” Audrey said, helping Caleb stand up while using her free hand to press against her stomach. The contractions were coming in rapid, overlapping waves now. The warm, unmistakable wetness of amniotic fluid soaked through the fabric of her leggings.

Audrey looked down, her breath catching in her throat.

“Oh, God,” she whispered, her face draining of all color. “The baby... the baby is coming right now.”

Brooke Ellis, still hammering frantically on the outside of the locked hallway door, saw Audrey collapse against the bed and began screaming for emergency maintenance to override the security seals.
