Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

The evening chill began to settle over the estate, prompting the warm glow of carriage lamps to flicker on along the stone pathways of the garden.
Lily ran up the veranda steps, her cheeks flushed with healthy color, holding the panting puppy in her arms.
"Damon! Marcus! Barnaby caught the ball three times!" she announced proudly, her hazel eyes shining with happiness.
"Is that right?" Damon smiled, walking over and kneeling down so he was eye-level with her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a clean handkerchief, gently wiping a smudge of grass from her cheek. "Sounds like Barnaby is turning into a professional athlete. But it's getting late, young lady. Past your bedtime."
Lily pouted playfully, crossing her arms over her yellow dress. "Five more minutes? Please? The stars are just coming out."
Damon looked up at the darkening sky, where the first bright stars were beginning to pierce the violet expanse above the hills. He remembered another night, six months ago, under the freezing, indifferent sky of a downtown alley, when the stars had looked like cold, distant lights shining down on a world that had abandoned her.
Now, those same stars felt close, warm, and full of promise.
"Alright," Damon said, wrapping his arm gently around her small shoulders and pulling her close against his side. "Five minutes. But then we go inside for hot chocolate and a story."
"Deal!" Lily said brightly.
She leaned her head against Damon’s shoulder, perfectly content, safe, and deeply loved. In her backpack resting by the doorway, the old, charred teddy bear remained tucked away safely—not as a reminder of the cold and the pain, but as a testament to how far she had come, and the miracle that had changed two lives forever.
Damon looked down at her, a profound sense of completeness settling deep into his soul. The billionaire who once thought wealth was measured in stock portfolios and balance sheets finally understood the true currency of life.
It was love. It was family. It was being there when someone in the dark called out for help, and refusing to walk away.

"I've got you, Lily," Damon whispered softly into the evening breeze.
"I know, Damon," Lily replied, smiling up at the stars. "And I've got you, too."
