Chapter 8 - THE STURM IN THE COURTYARD

Friday evening arrived with a heavy, ominous fog rolling in off Newport Harbor, blanketing Breakers Mansion in a thick, gray shroud. Inside, however, the atmosphere was warm and bright. Dinner had concluded ten minutes ago, and Abigail was overseeing the boys brushing their teeth when the sharp, urgent chime of the front security gate echoed through the intercom system.

Moments later, the heavy oak front doors flew open.

A tall, silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit strode into the grand foyer, flanked by two burly security guards in dark overcoats. It was Victor Sterling, CEO of Vanguard Holdings—Pedro’s fiercest corporate rival and the man whose multi-million-dollar acquisition deal Pedro had casually sidelined the day before.

"Pedro Jacobs!" Victor’s voice boomed across the marble foyer, dripping with condescending amusement. "I must say, it takes a staggering amount of arrogance to refuse a meeting in Boston and force a rival CEO to track you down in your own private fortress on a Friday night."

Pedro emerged from his study at the end of the second-floor gallery, stepping out onto the iron railing and looking down into the foyer. His face was a mask of cold, absolute ice.

"Victor," Pedro said, his voice dropping into a lethal, glacial register as he walked down the grand staircase. "You are trespassing on private property. My security team should have escorted you off the grounds the moment your car crossed the gate."

Victor laughed, an arrogant, booming sound that bounced off the marble pillars. "Trespassing? Please, Pedro. Your little stunt at Jacobs Tower nearly cost both of us a fortune. I came here to settle this face-to-face like businessmen. No games. Sign the Sterling Maritime transfer papers tonight, and we split the shipping lanes fifty-fifty. Refuse, and I’ll bury your logistics network by Monday morning."

Upstairs, standing near the doorway of the boys' suite, Ben and Jerry peeked out into the hallway, their eyes wide with fear. The sudden shouting and the presence of intimidating strangers instantly triggered the old, familiar terror—the feeling that their world was about to shatter all over again.

Abigail stepped out into the hallway, pulling the boys behind her. Her eyes flashed with absolute fury. This man—this corporate vulture—had brought his boardroom war into a home that was finally healing.

She didn't hesitate. She didn't wait for Pedro to handle it.

Abigail strode down the grand staircase, her heels clicking sharply against the marble steps like the strikes of a drum. Every step she took radiated an aura of unyielding, terrifying authority that commanded immediate silence.

Victor Sterling stopped mid-sentence, turning his gaze toward the staircase as Abigail descended into the light of the grand crystal chandelier.

"Mr. Sterling," Abigail’s voice cut through the cavernous foyer like a razor-sharp blade. "You are currently standing in a private residence. You are screaming in front of young children. And you are exhibiting the absolute worst kind of pathetic, small-minded corporate desperation."

Victor blinked in sheer disbelief, his jaw dropping open. He turned to Pedro, pointing a manicured finger at Abigail. "Who in God's name is this? Your maid? Are you letting your domestic staff negotiate your multi-million-dollar contracts now, Pedro? Have you lost your damn mind?"

Pedro didn't answer immediately. Instead, a slow, predatory smile spread across his face—not a warm smile, but the expression of a apex predator watching a fool walk directly into a trap. He stepped down beside Abigail, his shoulder brushing hers, forming an unbreakable united front.

"Victor," Pedro said softly, his voice dangerously smooth. "Let me introduce you to Ms. Abigail Hill. She manages my household. And unlike you, she knows the difference between a valuable asset and garbage."

Victor’s face flushed a deep, furious crimson. "You arrogant son of a—"

"Enough," Abigail snapped, stepping forward until she was mere inches away from the corporate titan, staring him down without an ounce of fear. "You have thirty seconds to turn around, walk back out those front doors, and get off Mr. Jacobs’s property before I have security throw you into the freezing harbor. And trust me—she added, a cold, dangerous glint in her eye—"she has a much better throwing arm than you think."

The two security guards flanking Victor instinctively shifted their weight, looking uncomfortable, clearly recognizing the lethal, unyielding discipline radiating from Abigail. They had dealt with angry executives before; they had never encountered a woman who looked like she could dismantle a special forces unit with a clipboard.

Victor glared at Pedro, his chest heaving with rage. "You'll regret this, Jacobs! Both of you! This deal is dead!"

May you like

"The deal was dead the moment you brought your noise into my home," Pedro replied coldly. "Get out."

Fuming, Victor spun on his heel, gesturing frantically to his guards, and stormed out the front doors, slamming them shut behind him with a thunderous echo that shook the entire foyer.
