Chapter 4 - The CID Investigation and Federal Action

While Lucas slept under the steady watch of the automated IV drip, the hallway outside his room began to hum with quiet, purposeful activity. Through the small glass window in the door, I saw two men in crisp civilian suits flashing badges at the nursing station. Military Criminal Investigation Division (CID) agents. They didn’t waste time; they moved with the sharp, synchronized precision of active-duty professionals who had received a direct order from a commanding officer.
I slipped out into the hallway, pulling the door closed behind me so I wouldn’t wake Lucas.
“Captain Reynolds?” the taller of the two agents asked, flashing an ID wallet. I noted the name: Special Agent Miller. His partner stood a step behind him, holding a heavy tactical briefcase.
“That’s me,” I said.
“We just came from your residence on Maple Street,” Miller said, keeping his voice low. “We executed an immediate administrative seizure of the family care packet and secured the original carbon copies from your aunt and uncle’s study. We also pulled the digital submission logs from the armory administration portal.”
“And?” I asked.
“And it’s an open-and-shut case of federal document falsification, Title 10 obstruction, and wire fraud,” Miller said, pulling a digital tablet from his coat pocket and tapping the screen. “Your cousin Shawn used a spoofed digital signature key tied to your auxiliary military login to bypass the dual-authentication check three weeks ago. He submitted false guardian affidavits signed with a forged notary stamp. Furthermore, local police picked up your aunt Martha about twenty minutes ago after she tried to shred the secondary carbon logs in her backyard fire pit.”
A cold satisfaction washed over me, though it was tempered by the sheer exhaustion weighing down my limbs. “My uncle Arthur?”
“Cooperating fully,” Miller replied. “He signed a sworn affidavit stating that Martha and Shawn plotted to isolate your son and forge the documents so they could control your housing allowance while you were deployed. They planned to move Lucas into a local boarding facility during the week and pocket the residual military stipend.”
I closed my eyes for a brief moment, letting the betrayal settle and wash away, leaving behind only absolute clarity. For years, my extended family had treated me like a paycheck and a status symbol—the soldier son who brought honor to the family name while quietly absorbing their constant demands for financial bailouts and favors. They had viewed Lucas not as a human being, a child who needed love and safety, but as an inconvenient anchor holding me down.
“What happens next?” I asked.
“We have enough to issue an immediate federal arrest warrant for Shawn for felony assault resulting in severe bodily harm, alongside the military fraud charges,” Miller said. “As for your family care plan, it’s permanently voided. You are officially on emergency humanitarian hold. You don’t need to worry about the Guard or your deployment status anymore; Colonel Vance has personally locked your file until you petition for an honorable discharge or a permanent hardship separation if you choose.”
“I’m taking a medical and hardship discharge,” I said without hesitation. The military had been my life for over a decade, but my son was my true duty. There was no choice to make; there never really had been.
“Understood, Captain. We’ll expedite the paperwork from our end,” Agent Miller said, extending his hand. “We’ll station an MP detail outside your son’s hospital room for the next forty-eight hours just to ensure absolute security while local authorities process the arrests.”
“Thank you, Agent.”
After the CID agents departed, I walked back into Lucas’s room. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long, amber streaks across the sterile hospital floor. Lucas was still sleeping peacefully, his chest rising and falling without the ragged catch that had terrified me on the driveway that morning.
I pulled up the chair, sat down, and opened my laptop to begin drafting my formal separation request. But before I typed a single word, I leaned over the bed and gently brushed a lock of dark hair away from Lucas’s forehead.

He stirred slightly, muttered something incoherent, and curled his hand tighter around the edge of his hospital blanket.
“We’re safe now, buddy,” I whispered into the quiet room. “Just you and me.”
