Chapter 8 - A New Name

May fifteenth was a glorious, sun-drenched spring morning.

The court room for the final adoption decree was nothing like the dark, tense rooms of the criminal trial. This room was filled with flowers, warm wooden furniture, and light streaming through big arched windows. Judge Brenda Holloway—the same judge who had presided over the emergency hearing nine months earlier—sat behind the bench with a soft, warm smile on her face.

I wore a light yellow dress, and the kids were dressed in their finest outfits: Noah in a tiny blue bow tie and crisp white shirt, and Lucy in a floral sundress with yellow ribbons in her hair. Marcus Reyes sat beside us, looking more like a proud uncle than a legal representative.

"We are here today for the matter of the adoption of minor children Lucy and Noah," Judge Holloway announced cheerfully. "Claire Vance, please step forward to the podium."

I walked up to the microphone, holding Lucy’s hand on my left and carrying Noah on my right hip.

"Claire," Judge Holloway said, looking down at me with genuine warmth. "Nine months ago, you were thrown into a situation that no one could ever prepare for. You opened your home, your heart, and your life to these children in their darkest hour of need. You have provided them with safety, unconditional love, and an unwavering commitment."

She looked over at the children. "Lucy, Noah, do you know why we are here today?"

Lucy leaned close to the microphone on the podium, her voice clear and proud. "Because Aunt Claire is becoming our Mom today!"

A soft ripple of laughter and murmurs echoed from the small crowd of friends and neighbors—including Jenna, my neighbor, who had brought a massive bouquet of daisies—sitting in the gallery.

"That is exactly right, sweetie," Judge Holloway smiled. She picked up a thick fountain pen. "By the power vested in me by the State, I hereby grant the petition for adoption. From this moment forward, Lucy and Noah are legally declared to be the children of Claire Vance, possessing all rights of inheritance and care as if born to her. Furthermore, their legal names are officially amended to Lucy Claire Vance and Noah James Vance."

Bang!

The strike of the wooden gavel sounded not like an ending, but like the opening chord of a beautiful song.

The gallery erupted into applause. Lucy jumped up and down, clapping her hands, while Noah clapped along, delighted by all the noise. Judge Holloway stepped down from her high bench, walked over to us, and presented both children with official, gold-stamped certificates of adoption.

"Congratulations, Mom," Judge Holloway said softly, shaking my hand warmly. "You built a beautiful family out of a terrible night."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I whispered, tears of profound relief and joy flowing freely down my cheeks.

We spent the rest of the day celebrating. We rented out a private shelter at the city botanical garden—the kids' favorite place—inviting Marcus, Jenna, the social workers, and Officer Malik and Officer Ortiz, who both showed up off-duty carrying enormous stuffed animals for the kids.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in brilliant hues of pink, orange, and purple, I sat on a wooden bench overlooking the quiet garden lake.

Noah was fast asleep in his stroller, worn out from a day of running through the grass, his thumb tucked happily into his mouth. Lucy was sitting beside me, leaning her head against my arm, watching the white swans glide across the dark water.

"Mom?" Lucy whispered softly.

Hearing that word—spoken so naturally, so effortlessly, without a trace of hesitation or fear—made my heart swell to near bursting.

"Yes, my sweet girl?"

"Are we going to be happy now?"

May you like

I wrapped my arm around her shoulder, pulling her close against my side, watching the golden reflections ripple across the water.

"We are already happy, Lucy," I said gently. "And we are going to stay that way for a very, very long time."
