Chapter 3 - The arrival of authority

The glow of the hospital examination room felt suffocating as Dr. Vance finished documenting the chemical burn on Hazel’s back. He placed a sterile, breathable gauze over the wound to protect it before turning his full attention to me.
“You did the right thing by bringing her here immediately,” Dr. Vance said, resting a reassuring hand on my arm. “Injuries like this don't happen by chance. They require deliberate, repetitive actions over a prolonged period. Given the specific presentation, we are looking at classic indicators of Munchausen syndrome by proxy—or what medical professionals now term medical child abuse.”
As he spoke, the heavy door opened further, admitting a social worker named Elena Morales and a detective from the local police department’s juvenile division, Detective Marcus Thorne. Detective Thorne carried a small notebook, his expression professional and measured.
“Good afternoon,” Detective Thorne said, flashing his badge briefly. “I understand you brought your niece in after discovering a suspicious medical dressing?”
“Yes,” I replied, my voice shaking slightly as I handed him my phone, displaying Vanessa’s threatening texts. “My sister—Hazel’s mother—sent these messages within the last fifteen minutes. She threatened to report me for kidnapping because I refused to return Hazel to her custody.”
Detective Thorne read the messages, scrolling through the history. A faint frown lines his forehead. “These texts establish intent and panic on her part. She knows exactly what was hidden under that dressing. Social worker Morales, have you initiated the emergency hold?”
“Yes, Detective,” Elena Morales answered, stepping forward with a clipboard. “Hazel is now under protective custody of the hospital and child welfare services pending a full family court hearing. She will be safely transferred to a secure pediatric ward where her mother cannot access her.”
Hazel gripped my fingers tightly. “Are you staying with me?” she asked, panic threatening to break her fragile composure.
“I’m not going anywhere, peanut,” I promised, kissing the top of her head. “I’ll stay right beside you through all of this.”
Detective Thorne looked at me thoughtfully. “Your sister is likely on her way here or preparing to cause a massive scene. We need to anticipate her moves. Does she have any legal documents or prior medical files that she uses to control the narrative?”
“Boxes of them,” I answered instantly. “She keeps binders full of fake symptom logs, prescription schedules, and hospital discharge summaries in her home office. She uses them to convince everyone—including our parents—that Hazel is chronically dying.”

Detective Thorne nodded sharply. “We’ll coordinate with a judge tonight to secure a search warrant for her residence. In the meantime, security will lock down this wing. No visitors, especially named Vanessa Brooks, are permitted near this room.”
Just outside the heavy doors, a sudden commotion echoed down the sterile hallway—a shrill, familiar voice demanding entry, screaming my name with unhinged fury.
