Chapter 10 - The Epilogue – A Toast to Tomorrow

The evening sun dipped below the snowy horizon, casting a warm, amber glow across the frost-covered windows of our home.

The dining table was laden with a magnificent holiday feast—roast turkey, honey-glazed ham, roasted sweet potatoes, and a towering plate of chocolate chip cookies with extra sprinkles.

Laughter filled the dining room. My father was regaling Julian Vance with a hilarious, exaggerated story about how he had nearly burned down our kitchen trying to bake a pie last Thanksgiving, causing Julian to throw his head back in booming, unrestrained laughter.

Ellie sat between them, happily drawing pictures on a brand-new sketchpad, completely at ease, surrounded by warmth, safety, and unconditional love.

I raised my glass of sparkling cider, catching Julian’s eye across the table. He paused his conversation with my dad, raised his glass in silent, knowing salute, and offered a warm, approving smile.

I stood up slowly, clearing my throat gently. The room went quiet, all eyes turning toward me with affection and anticipation.

“To family,” I began, my voice clear, steady, and ringing with absolute joy. “Not the kind defined by blood or obligation, but the kind built on mutual respect, kindness, and unwavering support. To new beginnings, broken boxes left far behind, and the beautiful homes we build with our own hands.”

“To family!” my father echoed, raising his glass high.

“To new beginnings!” Ellie chimed in brightly, clinking her glass of apple juice against mine.

We drank, laughed, and celebrated deep into the snowy winter night. Outside, the wind howled softly against the windowpanes, but inside, our house was a fortress of light, warmth, and unshakeable peace.

The past was behind us. The future was ours to write. And for the first time in my life, every single page was filled with pure, unadulterated happiness.
