Chapter 10 - The Table Under the Sun

That summer, we gathered again at my parents' house for an annual family cookout.

It was a bright, perfect July afternoon. The old maple tree provided a deep canopy of shade over the lawn. The wooden fence had been freshly painted by Ryan and my father over a weekend project, its bright white slats gleaming in the sunlight.

Ryan stood near the grill, but the atmosphere was completely different from four years ago. He wasn't holding court or giving unsolicited lectures about expansions. He was laughing with our cousin, patiently showing his twin boys and Leo how to properly flip burgers without losing the juices.

"Hey, Leo!" Ryan called out, gesturing with his tongs. "First burger off the grill is coming up. Cheese or plain?"

Leo looked over from where he was setting up a badminton net in the grass. "Double cheese, Uncle Ryan!"

"You got it, buddy!" Ryan shouted back with a genuine warm smile. "Coming right up!"

I sat on the porch step with a glass of lemonade, watching the scene. My mother sat beside me, shelling fresh peas into a ceramic bowl, her face completely free of the tension that used to line her eyes.

My father walked over from his garden patch, carrying a basket of ripe tomatoes. He set them on the porch table, sat down beside us, and looked out across the yard at his grandchildren playing together on the grass.

"It’s a good day," my father said quietly, taking a slow breath of the warm summer air.

"It really is, Dad," I agreed.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw an email notification from my managing partner. We had just been awarded the state contract to manage a $50 million regional development fund.

I looked at the notification for a moment, felt the quiet thrill of achievement, and then slipped the phone back into my pocket without saying a word. I didn't need to announce it. I didn't need to perform my success for anyone in that yard.

Leo came running across the lawn, his forehead shining with sweat, holding a paper plate with a double cheeseburger high in the air like a trophy.

"Mom! Look!" he beamed, sitting down beside me on the porch step. "Uncle Ryan gave me the biggest one!"

I wrapped my arm around his shoulders, pulling him close, smelling the sunshine and fresh grass on his shirt.

"Looks delicious, sweetheart," I said softly, kissing the top of his head. "Eat up. You've got a big future to build."

He took a huge bite, smiled with his whole face, and looked out toward the sunlit lawn, completely secure in the knowledge that the world belonged to him.
