Chapter 5 - The Corporate Coup

Ivan slammed his hands onto the polished walnut table, leaning over it like a caged animal ready to snap.
“You can’t do this!” Ivan shouted, spittle flying from his lips. “I built this company from the ground up! I closed the deals, I shook the hands, I put my face on every billboard in the tri-state area! You were just a ghost in the background!”
“A ghost that paid your legal fees when your first startup went under,” Sarah Jenkins said smoothly, opening her leather briefcase and sliding a thick binder across the table toward Marcus. “A ghost that secured the initial venture capital through her family’s remaining timber assets when every bank in the city turned you down. And a ghost, Mr. Sterling, who legally owns every single patent, trademark, and physical property currently bearing the Vanguard name.”
Marcus flipped open the binder, scanning the signatures and corporate seals. He looked up at Ivan with profound disappointment.
“You lied to us about the equity structure from the very beginning, Ivan,” Marcus said, his voice laced with disgust. “You told the board you owned seventy percent. You omitted the parent trust entirely.”
“It was a formality!” Ivan yelled, waving his hands frantically. “Elena didn't care about business! She liked gardening! She liked cooking! She was supposed to stay at home!”
I looked at him, my expression completely unreadable. “I liked those things because you demanded them, Ivan. You wanted a wife who looked like a trophy and acted like a servant, because it made you feel like an emperor in your own little kingdom. But empires built on deceit always crumble.”
“Security!” Ivan roared toward the hallway, turning his head in panic. “Get in here! Throw her out!”
No one came.
Instead, the frosted glass door of the boardroom opened wider, and two uniformed federal agents walked in, flanked by a building security guard.
“Ivan Sterling?” the lead agent asked, flashing a gold badge.
Ivan froze, his arms still braced against the table. “What is this? This is a private corporate meeting—!”
“Ivan Sterling, you’re under arrest for wire fraud, corporate identity theft, embezzlement, and falsification of federal financial disclosures,” the agent said calmly, stepping forward and pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
“No! No, wait! This is a mistake! My wife is having a mental breakdown! Look at her, she’s manipulating you!” Ivan thrashed as the agent grabbed his arms, forcing them behind his back. The sharp click-click of the handcuffs echoing in the silent boardroom sounded like music to my ears.
As they dragged him toward the exit, Ivan locked eyes with me one last time. His face was twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred.
“You’ll pay for this, Elena!” he screamed as the door pushed open. “I’ll take everything from you! I’ll—!”
The door clicked shut, cutting off his threats entirely.

The boardroom remained silent for a long, heavy moment. Then Marcus let out a long breath, closed the binder, and looked across the table at me.
“Well, Elena,” Marcus said, offering a respectful nod. “It appears we have a lot of restructuring to discuss. Welcome back to the corner office.”
