Chapter 9 - A FOUNDATION BUILT ON LOVE

Two years later, the Villaseñor estate in San Ángel was filled with music, laughter, and the scent of fresh orange blossoms.
It was the afternoon of Santiago’s wedding.
Unlike the ostentatious, stressful affair that the Fuentes family had tried to organize years before, this celebration was warm, vibrant, and intimate. Two hundred guests gathered in the central courtyard of our family home—not social climbing corporate attorneys or fake investors, but real friends, extended family, construction workers, architects, and community leaders from the housing projects we had built across the country.
Santiago stood near the stone altar by the central fountain, wearing a tailored charcoal suit. Beside him as his best man stood Mateo Ruiz, who was now a full-fledged Project Director at Villaseñor Group and a beloved member of our extended family.
And walking down the aisle, holding the arm of her proud father—a quiet, kind-hearted doctor from Puebla—was Valeria.
Valeria was a pediatric surgeon whom Santiago had met eighteen months earlier during a charity initiative to build children's clinics in rural communities. She was a woman of immense intelligence, warmth, and humility—someone who spent her days saving lives and her weekends volunteering at community shelters. She wore a simple, elegant lace dress, her smile illuminating the entire courtyard as she looked at Santiago.
I sat in the front row, wearing a refined rose-gold silk dress, holding the small photo of my late husband in my lap so he could be part of our joy.
When Santiago and Valeria exchanged their vows, there was not a single dry eye in the courtyard.
“Valeria,” Santiago said, his voice rich with emotion as he held her hands. “You taught me that true beauty is not something you display to the world to prove your worth. It is something you give to the world to make it better. I promise to stand by you, to build with you, and to honor you every day of my life.”
Valeria smiled, her eyes brimming with happy tears. “Santiago, you showed me that true strength is quiet, generous, and unwavering. I promise to love you, to respect you, and to build a home with you where everyone who enters finds warmth and respect.”
When the priest pronounced them husband and wife, the courtyard erupted in joyous applause. Guitars began to play, champagne glasses were filled, and the feast began.
Santiago brought Valeria over to my table. They both knelt beside my chair, and Santiago took my hands in his.
“Thank you, Mom,” Santiago whispered, his eyes shining with profound love. “Thank you for saving me three years ago. Thank you for teaching me what truly matters.”

Valeria leaned in and embraced me tightly. “Thank you for welcoming me into your family, Doña Elena. I promise to be a daughter you can always be proud of.”
I held them both close, my heart overflowing with happiness. “You already are, my children. You already are.”
