Chapter 4 - The Trap is Sprung

The private study off the main ballroom was a quiet sanctuary of dark wood paneling, leather armchairs, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with heavy, leather-bound volumes that looked like they had never been opened. A massive oak desk sat in the center of the room, illuminated by a green-shaded banker’s lamp that cast long, dramatic shadows across the Persian rug.
This was where the final blow was supposed to be struck.
I stood just outside the heavy double doors of the study, half-concealed by a large decorative palm tree in the hallway. My heart was thumping a rhythmic, frantic beat against my ribs, but my mind was laser-focused.
Footsteps approached down the carpeted corridor.
“Just sign right here, darling,” my mother’s voice purred, smooth as melted butter. “Martin drew it up so we wouldn't have to deal with endless banking red tape during your honeymoon. It’s all about efficiency.”
“If you say so, Mom,” Emily’s voice drifted closer, light and trusting. “Honestly, all this paperwork gives me a headache. I’m just glad Ryan and I are finally on the same page about everything.”
“Oh, you have no idea how much the same page you’re on,” Ryan added, his voice dripping with a smug amusement that made my blood boil.
The door to the study clicked open. The three of them stepped inside, the warm yellow light spilling out into the hallway. Ryan carried a sleek leather folder tucked under his arm, while my mother held a gold-plated fountain pen like a conductor’s baton.
I didn't wait. I stepped out from behind the palm tree, my heels clicking sharply against the floor.
“I wouldn't use that pen if I were you, Em,” I said clearly.
The three of them froze as if struck by lightning.
Helen spun around first, her face contorting into an ugly snarl. “Rachel! What in God’s name are you doing? How dare you follow us into a private family meeting—”
“Family meeting?” I interrupted, stepping across the threshold into the study. I didn't look at my mother; my eyes locked onto my sister, who was staring at me in utter confusion.
“Rachel?” Emily blinked, her hand hovering over the desk where the papers lay spread out. “What’s going on? Why do you look like that?”
“Look at what you’re about to sign, Em,” I said softly, stepping closer to the oak desk and pointing down at the pages.
Ryan instantly stepped forward, trying to block my path, his charming smile replaced by a hard, venomous glare. “Back off, Rachel. This is a private legal matter between husband and wife. You have no business interfering here. Security!” he barked toward the hallway, though no one was there yet.
“Don’t you dare touch her,” a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the doorway.
Martin, our family attorney, stepped into the room, flanked by two uniformed hotel security officers whom Greg had quietly intercepted outside. Martin looked furious, clutching a thick manila folder of his own.
“Mr. Martin?” Emily gasped, looking back and forth between the lawyer and our mother. “What is going on? Why are you here?”
“I’m here, Emily, because your mother and your new husband attempted to commit corporate and familial fraud using a forged electronic signature in my name,” Martin said bluntly, not mincing words. He walked straight up to the desk, picked up the top document, and slammed it down in front of my sister. “Look at page four. That isn't a vendor release for the catering company. That’s a total asset transfer assigning 100% of your father's trust fund directly to Ryan’s personal offshore LLC.”
The room went dead silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick rug.
Emily slowly lowered her gaze to the paper. Her face went from confused to pale, then past pale into a translucent, shell-shocked white.
“What... what is this?” she whispered, her hands beginning to shake violently as she read the legal jargon highlighted by Martin’s red pen.
“It’s a robbery, sweetie,” I said gently, stepping up beside her and wrapping an arm around her trembling shoulders. “They planned it for months. Mom helped him set it up.”

Emily slowly turned her head, looking at our mother with eyes brimming with a devastation so profound it was painful to witness.
“Mom... is this true?” Emily’s voice broke, cracking down the middle like fragile glass. “Did you... did you help him steal my dad’s legacy?”
