Chapter 6 - Retribution and Representation

The conference room of Harrison & Sterling Law Firm smelled of polished mahogany, old leather, and expensive espresso.

Across the sleek glass table sat Marcus Sterling, a legendary forensic litigator known for tearing corporate fraudsters and high-society predators to shreds. He had white hair, sharp steel-grey eyes, and a reputation for never losing a case involving financial concealment.

I had managed to secure a pro-bono consultation through an old college acquaintance who worked as his paralegal, presenting him with the dossier I had compiled over three sleepless nights.

Marcus adjusted his reading glasses, sliding the printed corporate filings back across the table. He looked at Naya, who sat beside me nervously wringing her hands over her swelling stomach, and then looked at me.

“Mrs. Vance,” Marcus said, his voice deep and resonant. “Or I should say, Ms. Parker, representing your sister. What you’ve handed me here is a textbook asset-shielding scheme orchestrated by Arthur Vance, using his nephew Mike as the fall guy.”

Naya gasped. “Arthur is involved? You think Uncle Arthur set this up?”

“Think?” Marcus offered a cold, humorless smile. “My dear, Arthur Vance has been hiding corporate debt and skimming developer funds for over a decade. Mike was his proxy. When the firm started auditing two weeks ago, Arthur threw Mike under the bus to protect his own assets. That’s why Mike fled. He realized his uncle was about to let him take the criminal fall for a multi-million-dollar embezzlement charge.”

The air in the room felt heavy. Naya looked like she was about to faint. I reached over, squeezing her cold hand tightly.

“Can we save the house?” I asked Marcus. “Can we protect her and the unborn child from bearing the brunt of his federal debt?”

Marcus leaned back in his leather chair, interlocking his fingers over his stomach. “We can. But it’s going to require a very public, very aggressive counter-offensive. We don't just file for divorce and asset division. We file a civil RICO suit against Arthur Vance and Michael Vance for fraudulent conveyance, emotional distress, and financial predation.”

“Arthur will destroy us,” Naya whispered, shaking her head. “He owns half the commercial real estate in this county. Judges go to his golf club.”

“Let him try,” Marcus said, his eyes flashing with a predatory gleam. “Public opinion is a powerful weapon, Ms. Vance. And right now, public opinion is waiting for someone to pull back the curtain on the great Arthur Vance.”

That afternoon, Marcus’s firm filed emergency injunctions freezing all remaining assets tied to Arthur and Mike Vance, including the trust funds, the commercial properties, and the deeds to three luxury vehicles.

When the news hit the local financial papers the next morning, the shockwaves reached our mother’s front door within hours.
