Chapter 6 - The Fall

For a second, time seemed to stretch into an agonizing eternity. Without the support of the crutch, my body tilted sharply to the side. My right leg couldn't bear an ounce of weight, and the titanium rods inside my femur sent a white-hot flash of blinding pain straight up my spine.

The floor rushed up to meet me.

I heard my mother gasp, heard someone drop a paper plate filled with cake, and saw the blur of fifty shocked faces staring in horror as I crashed hard onto the hardwood floor, my knee slamming against the baseboard with a sickening crunch.

As darkness began to tunnel in at the edges of my vision, cutting off the noise, the bright lights, and the gasps of the crowd, my thumb—instinctively positioned inside the rubber grip of the crutch as my father dropped it clattering beside me—pressed down hard on the hidden Bluetooth button.

Click.

The signal flashed through the air, piercing the router, bypassing the firewall, and unlocking Project Janus.

Then everything went black.
