Chapter 10 - The Foundation of Forever

Five years later, the sun beat down warmly on the campus quad of the State University, where students in bright graduation gowns milled about in a joyous sea of laughter, camera flashes, and celebratory hugs.
I stood near the edge of the brick plaza, adjusting the collar of my suit jacket, feeling a familiar lump rise in my throat as I watched the procession.
Ava strode across the stage with her head held high, adjusting her valedictorian sash and accepting her diploma with the same unshakeable poise she had shown in that crowded living room five years ago. She had just earned a full academic scholarship to study pre-law and public advocacy, determined to spend her life ensuring that no child would ever have to stand alone against a world of silent adults.
Beside me, a tall, bright-eyed twelve-year-old boy in a sharp blue blazer leaned over and nudged my arm.
"Dad, look, she's waving right at us!" Tommy grinned, pointing eagerly toward the stage.
I looked up just as Ava scanned the crowd, her eyes locking onto ours. A brilliant, radiant smile broke across her face—the smile of a young woman who had walked through the fire and emerged completely unbroken, stronger and more radiant than ever.
As the ceremony concluded and the crowd erupted into cheers, we met her near the massive oak tree at the center of the quad.
Tommy ran forward first, catching her in a flying hug that nearly sent them both tumbling onto the grass. Ava laughed, spinning him around before setting him down and stepping right into my arms.
I wrapped my arms tightly around my daughter, resting my chin on her graduation cap, feeling an overwhelming wave of gratitude and profound peace wash over me.

"We did it, Dad," she whispered against my shoulder, her voice steady and full of promise.
"We did, sweetheart," I replied, looking out over the bright, sunlit campus where our new life stretched endlessly ahead. "We really did."
