Chapter 4 - Clare's Desperate Retaliation

Toxic people do not handle boundaries well; they view them as a declaration of war. By Wednesday morning, Clare realized she couldn't reach me via phone or text, so she turned to her favorite weapon: the court of public opinion.

I found out during my lunch break at the accounting firm where I worked as a clerk. Sarah, the mom who had sent me the video, texted me a link with the message: Have you seen this? Don't worry, I've got your back.

I clicked the link. It was a long, melodramatic post on a local community Facebook page, written by Clare.

It breaks my heart to write this, but my sister has completely lost her mind. At my niece's party this weekend, she had a psychotic breakdown just because my sweet daughter Olivia tried to help blow out some candles. Now, Denise is extorting my elderly parents for money and keeping my niece away from her loving family. If you know Denise Parks, please pray for her mental health. She is unstable and trying to destroy our family over a cake.

The post had dozens of comments. A few were from Clare's echo chamber, offering fake sympathy. But as I scrolled down, my anxiety turned into astonishment.

Sarah had commented. And she hadn't just commented—she brought receipts.

Sarah Jenkins: Clare, this is a complete fabrication. I was at that party. I watched your parents physically move a cake with Norah's name on it away from her, and I watched you hand your daughter a knife to cut it while the birthday girl sobbed. I have the entire thing on video. Denise is a fantastic mother who finally stood up to a family of bullies. Delete this before you embarrass yourself further.

Other parents from the party chimed in immediately.

Mark Davis: I was there too. What you people did to that little girl was despicable. Good for Denise. Elena Rostova: I’ve never seen adults act so cruelly to a child. You people should be ashamed. Btw, I told the owner of the bounce house company what happened, and you’re blacklisted.

Clare panicked. She tried to delete the comments, but people kept posting. She eventually deleted the entire thread, but in a small town, the internet is written in ink. The damage to her carefully curated reputation was done.

At 4:45 PM that afternoon, my banking app pinged. Incoming Wire Transfer: $345.50.

They had paid. Not out of guilt, but out of absolute terror that I would release the video to the broader public. I stared at the numbers on my screen, and for the first time in my life, I laughed at them. A loud, joyful laugh that echoed in the breakroom. The boogeymen of my childhood had been reduced to cowards paying a ransom for their reputations.
