Chapter 4 - The Safe House

The text message burned against my palm as if the phone screen were glowing red-hot. I stopped dead in the middle of the hospital hallway, my thumb hovering over the glowing digits of Mark’s number.
“Mrs. Vance?” Detective Miller paused, turning back to look at me. “What is it?”
I wordlessly turned the phone around and thrust it toward her. Her sharp eyes scanned the screen, and her expression instantly hardened. She pressed a button on her shoulder radio.
“Dispatch, this is Detective Miller. Be advised, the suspect, Mark Vance, just texted the victim’s phone threatening abduction. He’s mobile in a 2021 silver Honda Accord, Ohio plate Victor-Delta-Seven-Four-Nine. Route unknown, but likely heading toward the interstate or rural Delaware County. All units, intercept and hold.”
A crackle of static and affirmative acknowledgments blared from the radio.
“Mommy?” Lily’s small, trembling voice came from beside me. She was being wheeled in a comfortable transport chair by a pediatric nurse. “Is Daddy coming to get us?”
My heart shattered into a million pieces. I knelt beside her, ignoring the cold linoleum floor pressing into my knees, and took her uninjured little hand in mine. I forced the most reassuring smile I could muster onto my face, though my lips were trembling.
“No, sweetheart,” I said, stroking her soft hair carefully away from her bruised cheek. “Daddy isn’t coming. But you are with me, and we are safe. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I promise you that on my life.”
Lily stared at me for a long moment, searching my eyes. Then, slowly, a tiny fraction of the tension left her small frame, and she nodded.
Dr. Reeves stepped out of a nearby office, holding a thick manila folder filled with medical charts, X-rays, and official documentation.
“Sarah,” Dr. Reeves said gently, handing the folder to Detective Miller. “All the pediatric forensic documentation is complete. Child Protective Services caseworker is waiting in Conference Room B. She’s arranged an emergency placement at a secure family transition facility downtown. It’s confidential; neither your mother nor your husband will be able to track you there.”
“Thank you,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “Dr. Reeves... I don’t even know how to thank you. If you hadn’t looked closer... if you hadn’t locked that door...”
“It’s my job, Sarah,” Dr. Reeves said, giving my hand a warm, supportive squeeze. “And now, your job is to protect your daughter and let the law do its work. Go with the detective.”
The next two hours passed in a surreal, dreamlike blur.
We were ushered into a private, windowless conference room where a compassionate CPS caseworker named Brenda Vance—thankfully no relation—reviewed our emergency safety plan. She explained that a temporary restraining order would be filed immediately against Mark, Vanessa, and my mother, Diane.
By noon, an unmarked police vehicle transported Lily and me to a secure family safe house on the quiet outskirts of Columbus. The facility was run by a non-profit organization dedicated to domestic violence and child advocacy. It was warm, secure, and heavily monitored by private security cameras and local patrols.
As I tucked Lily into a clean, white twin bed in our temporary room, she finally fell into a deep, exhausted sleep. The fever had broken, aided by the hospital medication, but her breathing remained shallow and uneven.
I sat in a stiff wooden chair beside her bed, keeping watch.
My phone buzzed again. It wasn't Mark this time. It was a local news alert from a Columbus news station.
BREAKING NEWS: Columbus Police and Child Protective Services execute search warrant at a Dublin residence following a suspected child abuse investigation. Two individuals detained for questioning. Authorities are currently searching for a third person of interest, Mark Vance, in connection with the ongoing investigation.
Beneath the headline was a live aerial shot of my house. News vans were clogging the cul-de-sac. Neighbors were standing on their lawns, staring in disbelief.
And then, my phone rang. A direct call from an unknown, blocked number.
I stared at the screen, my thumb hovering over the green answer button. My pulse thundered in my ears. I knew who it was.

Taking a deep breath, I swiped the screen and pressed it to my ear.
“Sarah,” Mark’s voice hissed through the speaker, low, frantic, and dripping with venom. “You stupid, selfish bitch. You’ve ruined everything for all of us.”
