Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Visitors

A week after my phone conversation with my father, the security intercom at the front desk of our New York building chimed softly.

The doorman's voice came through the speaker. "Mrs. Vance? There are four people down here claiming to be your parents and family. They said you're expecting them, but they're not on the guest list."

I frowned, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window at the treetops of Central Park below. I certainly hadn't invited them.

"Send them away, please," I instructed the doorman. "Tell them they are not authorized guests."

"I tried, ma'am, but they're causing quite a scene in the lobby. Your brother is shouting about legal rights and trespassing."

I sighed, rubbing my temples. "Fine. Escort them up. But keep security stationed outside the door."

Ten minutes later, the private elevator chimed directly into our penthouse foyer.

My parents, Ethan, and Claire stepped out of the elevator. They looked completely disheveled. My mother's hair was unbrushed, my father looked exhausted and defeated in a wrinkled suit, and Ethan looked like a ghost of the arrogant young man who had hijacked Lily's birthday party.

"Clara!" my mother cried out, rushing forward as if to hug me, but stopping short when she saw the cold, uninviting expression on my face and the two security guards standing near the elevator doors.

"How did you even find this address?" I asked coldly, crossing my arms.

"We tracked public property records through David's old LLC," Ethan blurted out, stepping forward with a desperate, pleading look in his eyes. "Clara, please. You have to listen to us. Harvard formally rescinded my admission this morning. They gave my spot to someone on the waitlist."

I stared at him, feeling neither pity nor satisfaction—only a quiet, profound sense of closure. "I'm sorry to hear that, Ethan. But your academic future was never my responsibility. You earned your acceptance, and apparently, you earned its cancellation, too."

"You ruined my life!" Ethan suddenly snapped, his facade of remorse cracking to reveal the ugly entitlement underneath. "Over a stupid birthday party?! Over some spilled frosting?! You threw away my entire future for a brat who doesn't even understand what Harvard is!"

Before the words had even fully left his mouth, a small voice echoed from the hallway behind me.

"My name is Lily. And I'm not a brat."
