Chapter 9 - The Verdict and Sentence

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
When the wooden doors opened and the jury marched back into the courtroom, the air was thick with tension. Gerald stood beside Pendelton, his knees visibly shaking. Patricia, Travis, and Vanessa sat in the row behind him, holding hands, looking pale and terrified.
James sat beside me, gripping my hand tightly.
Judge Torres took the paper from the jury foreman and looked down at Gerald with cold eyes.
"Will the defendant please rise," Judge Torres commanded.
Gerald stood up, leaning heavily on the defense table for support.
"In the case of the State of Texas versus Gerald Hutchinson, on Count One, Injury to a Child causing serious bodily injury, how do you find?"
"We find the defendant, Gerald Hutchinson, Guilty," the foreman announced firmly.
Patricia let out a loud, hysterical sob, collapsing against Travis’s shoulder. Vanessa covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face. Gerald looked like he had been struck by lightning; he sank back into his chair, staring blankly at the floor.
Two weeks later, the sentencing hearing took place.
Judge Torres did not hold back. Before pronouncing the sentence, she looked down at Gerald from the bench.
"Mr. Hutchinson," Judge Torres began, her voice ringing through the silent room. "You spent sixty years building a reputation as a pillar of this community. But behind closed doors, you were a tyrant who used violence to intimidate those smaller and weaker than you. You showed zero remorse during this trial, blaming a three-year-old child for your own brutal actions."
She cleared her throat and straightened her papers.
"It is the order of this court that you be remanded to the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to serve a term of fifteen years in state prison."
Gerald was immediately handcuffed by court bailiffs. As they led him away in bright orange prison clothes, he turned his head to look at me one last time. For the first time in my life, there was no anger in his eyes—only total, devastating defeat. He was an old man going to prison, where he would likely spend the rest of his life.
In the civil suit that followed shortly after, Gerald’s estate was ordered to pay three million dollars in damages to a trust fund created specifically for Lily's future education and medical care. To satisfy the judgment, my parents were forced to sell their large suburban home, their luxury cars, and the family construction business.
Patricia was forced to move into a modest, one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of town, living off a tiny monthly pension, completely stripped of her social standing and wealth.

Travis’s car dealership went bankrupt without Gerald’s backing, forcing him to take an entry-level sales job at a commercial lot. Vanessa’s husband divorced her shortly after the trial, citing the toxic nature of her family.
The empire of fear and control that Gerald Hutchinson had built over forty years had completely collapsed.
