Chapter 6 - The Matriarch’s Visit

The car door opened, and Margaret stepped out, leaning on her ivory-handled cane. She wore a tailored charcoal coat despite the warm evening air, her silver hair neatly pinned back, her posture as unyielding as ever.

Elena, who was watering the marigolds by the front steps, stopped and stood up, wiping her hands on her apron. "Margaret? Is everything alright?"

Margaret walked up the wooden pathway, her sharp eyes scanning the flowerbeds with quiet approval. "It is much more peaceful out here than it is in the city, Elena. May I come in?"

"Of course," Elena said, immediately opening the front door and guiding the elderly matriarch into the living room, where Julian was helping Mia color a picture of a dinosaur.

When Mia saw her great-grandmother, her face lit up. "Grandma Margaret!" she cheered, running over and throwing her arms around the old woman's waist.

Margaret, who had spent decades maintaining a stern, untouchable facade for the sake of the corporate world, melted instantly. She knelt down with surprising agility, hugging the little girl tightly. "Hello, my brave little explorer. How are the dinosaurs treating you?"

"They're good! I finished the puzzle all by myself!" Mia declared proudly.

"I have no doubt about that," Margaret smiled, kissing Mia's cheek before looking up at Julian and Elena.

Once Mia was settled back at the coffee table with her crayons, Margaret accepted a cup of Earl Grey tea from Elena and sat down in the armchair.

"I come bearing news," Margaret announced, setting her teacup down on the saucer with a gentle clink. "The legal restructuring of the estate is complete."

Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "How bad was it for Richard?"

"Worse than he anticipated, better than he deserved," Margaret said flatly. "His assets have been seized to cover the embezzled funds, and the board has formally removed him from all executive positions. He and Vanessa are currently looking for apartments in a much more modest neighborhood. They actually have to budget their groceries now. It's miraculous what a little adversity can do for the human character."

Elena couldn't help a small, satisfied smirk. "And the trust fund distributions?"

"Reallocated entirely," Margaret said, her gaze shifting to Elena. "A significant portion has been placed into a permanent educational trust for Mia. But the majority of the Whitmore philanthropic foundation—which Richard was using as a personal piggy bank—has been redirected to fund nursing scholarships and pediatric care units across the state."

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She looked at Margaret, her eyes shining with sudden emotion. "Scholarships for nurses?"

"Yes," Margaret nodded softly. "In honor of the hardest-working, most compassionate woman I have ever had the privilege of calling family. It is time this family started valuing service over status."

Julian reached over, squeezing Elena’s hand tightly. "Thank you, Grandma."

Margaret waved a dismissive hand, though a warm glint shone in her eyes. "Don't thank me, Julian. I am simply rectifying decades of poor management. Now..." She paused, looking around the cozy, sunlit living room. "I believe I heard rumors of homemade lasagna being served for dinner. Am I invited, or do I need to sit by the trash?"

Mia burst out laughing, completely missing the dark humor of the reference, while Elena and Julian smiled, the last lingering shadows of that awful birthday party finally vanishing into the warm evening air.
