Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

The sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and soft rose. The patio lights flickered on overhead, casting a warm, golden glow across the tables where neighbors and family members were laughing, sharing food, and enjoying the simple beauty of a quiet Saturday evening.
Ava came running over, her cheeks flushed from playing, holding a small paper cup filled with vanilla ice cream that Michael’s neighbor had handed out.
“Mom, Uncle Mike, look! The dog gave me his paw!” she announced proudly, showing us a muddy paw print on her sneakers.
“That’s a very high honor, kiddo,” Michael laughed, lifting her up to sit on the edge of the picnic bench. “You must be officially certified as a dog whisperer now.”
“I think so,” she beamed, digging her spoon into the ice cream.
I looked at my brother, then down at my daughter, feeling a profound wave of peace wash over me. The storm of the wedding day—with its cold glitter, fake smiles, and petty malice—felt like a lifetime ago, a distant nightmare that had somehow cleared the air and left behind something infinitely more genuine, resilient, and true.
We had survived the snobbery, exposed the cruelty, and dismantled the false fairy tale to build something real in its place.
Brooke was hundreds of miles away in her parents' estate, likely scrolling through social media trying to convince a new circle of superficial acquaintances that she was the victim of a tragic misunderstanding. Let her. Her opinions no longer held any currency in our world.
